I hear that carving in walls for making an area fo a door is a bad idea!?!? Please tell me if it is a bad idea to carve...well if it is...wat is another way i can do to make a hole in a wall???...i mean i have a wall that is made and textured...then i thought of making a door to another area...shouldnt i carve.??...all i know that if u want to make a hole in the wall that is already made u can carve in it...but after i head that its a bad way...im lost and dunno how to do it...

Using carve is sometimes a bad idea, especially if you're going to carve through complex geometry. That often leads to way more brushes than you need to make the doorway. In older versions of Hammer carving occaisonally created geometry with leaks in it as well, but I'm not sure whether that's still true.

However, if used under the right circumstances carving can be a simple way to save time when you just want a rectangular hole through a rectangular brush, even better if the hole adjoins the edge of the brush (making the carve not a hole but a notch).

The real key is not to get lazy and use carve for everything, as simple holes through walls are not very interesting doorways. Eventually you probably want to have doorframes or arches, and your walls may have trim or other complex features. In those cases it would be a bad idea to use carve to create your doorways.

use seperate brushes , build them around your door, or use clip tool, and then when you used clip tool you often need to optimeze the wall by deleting and rescaling some blocks.

seperate brushes is the easeist way for a simple wall

i think theres a good clip tool tutorials around here somewhere (egirs site if it aint on snrakpit)

Yea you dont "make a hole in the brush you simply make brushes around your hole.

Carve=bad its as simple as that its much easier to use the clip tool, and clip out the brushes. Reals case is okay for carving, but even then thats really streaching it, because no matter what you dont have power over where the carving tool cuts the brushes.
The case of the matter is as your starting off as a mapper, dont use carve, use the clip tool and resize things, then slowly work your way into the carve tool, I use it from time to time (like how REAL stated) but even then its very minimal. I can give you the whole lecture of hammer's orgin and tell you why that tool is there, but that would take too long. Carve=bad I dont care what anyone else says, never use it when starting out.

Good note for clipping, ctril+S changes clip mode so you dont delete those precious Brushes...

I'm a new mapper and I agree, carve just isn't as versatile as the clip tool. The main problem I have with carve is that it sometimes breaks up the brushes in a haphazard manner, plus in my experience Hammer still treats the broken-up brush as a single entity, rather than separate brushes. That means it's nigh impossible to optimize the size or shape of the brush fragments in the wall you carved into.

What I usually do is make the brush for the door, then place it on my wall where I wish to have it. Then I use the clip tool to cut out the shape of the door, which also lets you make complex doorways that look better than just a simple square hole in a wall.

I agree with carving being bad. But don't forget to tie your brushes that make up your doorframe to the entity func_detail. Especially if it's a complex doorway.

not really, you must make the hole out of brushes, but you can clip the pieces that will eventually make the frame, assuming the hole is a door. you can clip the edges if you want debris, assuming its a blasted hole. you can clip all sorts of things to make unique shapes for your hole.

ok thanks Orpheus, but now imagine i did the hole with prop_static stuff (debris) now when people actually go inside the hole, they would find that the hole is made of squares when looking at the edges...can u clip the angles to appear more like a circular hole???...like a cave for example, i followed one of the tutorials here that explain making realistic tunnels and caves, but all i get at the end is bunch of circles flying through air, it wont make a realistic hole, i dont know if im missing something, but i really wish if there is a tutorial or and website or any 1 here that can help me in this problem...thanks... mapping is pretty much 100% trial and error. you seem to have a bit more error than most, but not tragically so.

my main issue is you seem to type your sentences with a reckless abandon for confusing me. how can things fly around?

i suggest you make test maps. small things that will compile fast. make your holes in them and perfect the process before you attempt it in your main map.

also, please work on your sentence structure, you are making people not want to help you.
