Hi. I have just started mapping for HL2:DM and I have found some maps that go along with tutorials, but when you click on the link it takes you a page with lots of text. I understand that this is what makes up the map but I would like to know how I can get this text into a state in which I can edit it.

Thanks.

Noodles.

You open it in Hammer- the map editor- not a text editor

Sorry I must have phrased it wrong. It looks something like this:

world
{
"id" "1"
"mapversion" "7"
"classname" "worldspawn"
"skyname" "sky_wasteland02"
"maxpropscreenwidth" "-1"
solid
{
"id" "1033"
side
{
"id" "85"
"plane" "(-1536 512 64) (512 512 64) (512 -1536 64)"
"material" "NATURE/SANDFLOOR010A"
"uaxis" "[1 0 0 0] 0.55"
"vaxis" "[0 -1 0 0] 0.55"
"rotation" "0"
"lightmapscale" "16"
"smoothing_groups" "0"
}
side
{
"id" "86"
"plane" "(-1536 -1536 0) (512 -1536 0) (512 512 0)"
"material" "NATURE/SANDFLOOR010A"
"uaxis" "[1 0 0 0] 0.55"
"vaxis" "[0 -1 0 0] 0.55"
"rotation" "0"
"lightmapscale" "16"
"smoothing_groups" "0"

How would I make this so I can edit it in Hammer?

Noodles

okay open a new file in note pad, copy all of this into note pad, file save it the name of what ever you want. Then find where you saved it, and rename. change the .txt to .vmf , now you can look at it in hammer

Is the problem with changing the name from name.txt to name .vmf? I only ask because Windows XP hides the .txt/.vmf/.mp3...... part of a file name by default. You change this behaviour in the Tools>Folder Options menu, View tab.

But you probably knew this already and this is probably not what you were getting at. So I'll shut up now.

save the file.

run hammer.

open the file in hammer.

Unless you are downloading either .rmf maps for HL1 or .map files for HL1 then this should work.
