Sounds more like an issue with your computer's ability to run hammer. (Try doing it before you look at any textures and such, with very few programs running)
Mine doesn't crash when I clip spheres, but for some reason it NEVER clips them across the line I want it to. I really don't know why. [addsig]

this is a computer-specific problem. Have someone here clip your sphere for you. then when you get it back it'll be fine. Also, It may not have locked up on you. I remember that i did a HUGE subdivide with about 35 displacemnts. I had to leave it OVERNIGHT to actually get it done. Unless it is crashing with an error, just let it go for a while: watch an episode of CSI or something.

The sphere is made in such a way that if you were to cut it into a dome
it would cause errors, so your clipping tool automaticaly fixes the
brushes inside the shpere so they dont screw up. If you
really need a dome, make a model of one and import it into hammer.

have you attempted to clip one in more, ore less than 1/2?
try clipping one in more pieces, and then combining them to get your desired size

I've seen a few people asking about domes and I think drglass is on to the right idea. I would build it in xsi and import the model in to hammer, or find someone that will build it for you. I would offer but I don't have my own net connection at this time.
