does anyone know of a way i can get a good tutorial for building an outside environment? I just started editing and hammer only has a tutorial for one room so i've been pretty much in the dark. thanks.

I suggest you build a few more rooms mess about a bit, get to grips with displacement surfaces, then read seom Skybox tutorials on this site, or another.

Once you have some experiance you can mess about outside, i would siggest using displacement surfaces for most of the floor area if it is wilderness. Other than that ive not got too much experience with outside locations.

I can handle outside in a boxed off area, but forests and whatnot are a bit over my head im afraid

I can send you a CS map I was working on that has a huge outside area.

For an outdoor environment, all you need are two things: tools/skybox texture and light_environment entity.

For the most basic setup, select the box you've built, and choose the skybox texture. Press Shift-T to apply the skybox texture to the entire box.

Put a light_environment entity inside your box, fiddle around with the color and brightness setting if you want. Without the light_environment entity, the skybox texture would not give off light.

This is the most bare-bone setup for an outdoor environment. You should NEVER use this setup in a real map you release. This brief description only gets you started.

I've been toying with the idea of making a first outside room tutorial, but haven't gotten around to it. Once I get photo shop I'll give it a go. [addsig]

outside room is an oxymoron. Outside space would be better imo

Well technically, you could say that there is lots of room outside, not necessarily A room, just room. [addsig]
