I added a 3D skybox to a map that was working fine and now after running vrad everything is dark that's not a model. I'm pretty sure it's the skybox because I removed it and recompilled and it's lit correctly.

I have the same light_env in both the main map and the skybox(in other words, 2 entities, one in each box). The props that are in the skybox show up fine. The problem is all the brushwork is dark. I've changed the setting on brightness and ambient all the way up to 1000 and it makes no difference.

The skybox is very large because I pulled the 1/16th scale coast model from the gcf and used it. I figured I needed the skybox around the whole model or I'd get an error. If I just run bsp it looks fine but of course no lighting. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Don

Edit: Once I figured out the right thing to search for in the forums I found my answer. The coast model is very large and the 1/16th map is inside it. Turning shadows off on the model fixed it.

Don,

I have the exact same problem with my map.
All the brushes are rendered black and the models all look normal.
I searched and found all brushes with model/prop textures and replaced the texture appropirately. There is a huge model in the map, and I turned off shadowing on it.
It still will not light properly. I have a 1/16th skybox with sky_camera and light_env,
and all my lights were placed well.
I've really hit a wall on the issue, and for the moment I've deleted all the lighting to make the map fullbright so I can still keep playtesting it etc.
Would appreciate any help that anyone could give.
Thanks,
Angel

Angel,

If you temporarily remove the 3D skybox how does it work? If it does then the problem is there. If not then I'm stumped.

Don,

The problem was there before I made the 3D skybox, and still remains even after re-making the 3D skybox.

I deleted the light_env and all the lights in the level to make it fullbright.

Some things I have found and deleted, I had a terrorist spawn point in the middle of a crate, and the light_env in the 3D skybox was partially imbedded in the ceiling of the skybox...
d>Some A few random brushes are still black and flickering, and I think it was because they were func_walls left over from the conversion from HL1.

I keep deleting and changing things that I think might be problematic, but nothing seems to help.

This may sound stupid, but select EVERYTHING and just move the selection somewhere else. I had this problem as well and that fixed it. I have NO idea what's causing it though.

i had a similar problem when i made my 1st skybox. it happened because the bottom brush of my skybox would have scaled up to be inside the map.

That is actually a great idea, I have done that before on a map and it helped with some things...I will try it and let you know if it works..

? quoting Angel Aries
A few random brushes are still black and flickering

make sure the textures that you are using DO NOT have MODEL or PROP in their names.

That rings a bell! Dark textures also happen when you use ones that are specifically for a model. You'll get the flicker from ok to dark as you move your view around. Only happens in the engine. They look fine in Hammer.

I did a search and removed all the textures that were using model/prop in the name.

When I say the brushes are black in the game engine, I mean EVERY brush in the map is black (before I made everything Fullbright) Now that the map is Fullbright, there are still random black brushes that in the engine are shaped one way, but in Hammer look quite a bit different in shape and size ??

I
I will have to put up some screenshots of these problems as soon as I figure out how...

The map is progressing REALLY well today, we playtested it with Bots and had a blast on it....

Now that I have selected everything and copy/paste moved it into an New.file I am going to destroy the 3D skybox and redo it. Then I am going to add the lighting back and see if the problem is gone.

Here are some pics of the problems I am having.

It illustrates the dark brushes, and also the 0000 pic is after I rebuilt the 3D skybox and re-applied the lighting, ran buildcubemaps....

I can post the .vmf if anyone wants to look at it for me.
Thanks,
Angel

it's hard to say from the screens why it's happening, but you have some serious HOM effects going on there.

post your vmf, and i'll find some time to have a look.

This is the .vmf I posted on filefence with screenshots.

THis version has the 3D skybox and lighting removed

There has to be a 3D skybox and the lights added to see the problem with all the brushes rendered black.

Thanks in advance,

I am REALLY getting frustrated, because I changed and improved a lot of things in the map today, and the problems are not going away.

you should really start a new thread for each editing question. it gets a lot less messy that way. and this thread is already marked as answered, so not many people would think of looking here for a new question.

and you might think this sounds petty, but posting in yellow doesn't help you either. yellow is what the forums use for links, so even if you'd made them clickable, they'de still have been lost in an ocean of yellowness.
