from what i've read, it'll probably be part of an SDK update in a couple of weeks time that includes the DoD:S editing stuff.
and methinks that general enquiries should be in the general forums.

also, i heard that HDR lighting seems to take up about 75% more space than regular lighting, in terms of the bsp filesize, so it will probably be something we want to use sparingly

Not sparingly, we want to use it wise.

While previweable lighting would be nice im afraid its only a rumor. The way hammer is built it cant be done. The reason why Doom 3 Unreal are able to do it is because their engines run on nothing BUT dynamic lights, so it incorporates part of the game engine into the editor. While it would be nice to have and dream about, I wouldnt get my hopes up if I were you.

Here is a list of outrageous feature requests. Really IMO the only thing it needs is for you to be able to change the pivit point in hammer, which they didn't request =P

There's more to this HDR update and that's tone mapping and other stuff. Basically they're trying to mimic the eye's reaction to light changes.
As for previewable, we were talking about previewable light in Hammer. That means, you can see the lighting in Hammer instead of having to compile to check the map in-game.
And those suggestions are just suggestions. Maybe some of them will make it, but I don't think that'll be very soon. So...
