Long story short, I recovered my vmf file using an un-delete program (See General Banter for full story). The problem is that the file is corrupted and gives an 'Out of memory' error when opening it in Hammer. Is there anyway I can save this file? I do not have a back-up.

I read some where that you can Edit the vmf file in notepad and bypass all the corrupted info, but i don't have the first clue. Can anyone help?

Well, this could get hard to do... you're sure you don't have the .vmx file of that map anymore either? Those are backup files from the .vmf's

Otherwise, going through the whole file trying to find stuff that looks wrong is probably the only solution, but it's probably a lot of work... You can open it in wordpad or notepad or any simple text editor, but even simple maps already are long, very long text files...

Luckily someone was able to do just that and edit the vmf file in notepad.

Well, at any rate, people who know how a vmt looks like(or should look like) in notepad could probably very easily recover/repair corrupted vmt's.

To some extend, yes, Paladin. It's just that .vmf files are long, very long... which makes it a bit harder. You could write a script that validates a .vmf and points out errors though, which I think that person did who fixed ben_j_davis' .vmf.

If you can remeber what you changed last that made it corrupt, then you can search teh vmf in notepad for that entity or brush, or whatever.

The file was corrupt because the file had accidently overwritten and then retrieved using an undelete program. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Well last nite I finally got the chance to have a look of what was left of my map.

It was a lot worse than I had imagined. Most of the brushe's were gone. The carefully made huge window was in peices, all the water, sky box and some of the models.

All is not lost though as I can quite easily repair it, bit of a set back though. Nevermind, gotta learn from your mistakes.
