Here's what I'm looking to do:

I'm making a SP total conversion (with a few buddies helping) about a psychic girl. It's a modern day setting, and the character has such things as a cell phone, wallet, ID, keychain, etc. Is there a way to make a screen that displays such things and allows them to be used?

I've seen roughly what I'm looking to do in Vampire: Bloodlines, but I have no idea how to go look at their code to see what I'm looking for.

If anyone can point me to a tutorial, I'd be grateful. I really wish someone would write a book along the lines of Mastering Unreal Tournament 2004 for the Source engine.

Thanks,
B

It would certainly require coding I'm afraid, and not many/any people here have experience with programming for the source engine. I suggest you check out the Valve wiki, or some source coding sites such Wavelength...

For the items, a clever programmer could find out some ways to do it. Personally I think creating an inventory class would be good, or using the already existing weapon system to put in items instead of weapons. The visualization is just that, a visualization a la the hud system. I think all you need is already there, just be creative on how you use it.
