Is there a way to disable VIS in-game which I think would render all parts of the current map and would allow me to take accurate "level overview" screenshots?

This should be posted in the editing help forums, not in general banter. As it is here, I don't know if you are talking about HL1 or HL2. If the latter then you can use "r_novis 1". If the former... I can't actually remember the command <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/sad.gif"> That's quite sad.

In HL1 there's no need to disable vis. You do need a special command to zoom out so that perspective looks alright. I'm certain the Valve ERC has a full step by step tutorial on making HL1 overviews, if that's what you need to do.

Thanks for everyones help. I posted this topic here because there is no editing involved just the actual game. My bad that i didn't specify Half-Life or Half-Life 2 but i meant HL2.

Ah ok - I can see your point there but it's still more about editing the game than playing it, so I'd use the editing boards for similar questions in the future.
