So I've started mapping recently, and I've run into problems here and there, but nothing that was impossible to fix, until now.

I'm using the largedoor_left and largedoor_right textures on a brush, and attempting to make the two meld together properly. I know that there's a lot of black space, and it's intended so you can throw the proper pieces on the proper part of the door.

I set the scales to .25, and just to make sure I had everything right, I made a brush way bigger than the texture, and clipped it down to just the part that WAS the texture. The problem is, the clipping tool doesn't seem precise enough, no matter how I clip it, there's extra black space, or extra texture space on one side or the other of the clip. Is there some obvious thing that I'm missing? I've been searching around for days to try to find the solution, but everything I've searched for turns up simple door tutorials. It seems like I'm the only one who has this problem, and I can't help but feel that it's because I'm missing something obvious.

Is your grid size set to 1?

the precision of the clipping tool is controlled by how large or small you have your grid size set at. the smallest (one unit) is equal to one inch, so you should have as much precision as you need.

the [ key makes the grid size smaller, the ] key makes it larger.

it also sounds like this texture is intended for use on a model. i can't be sure, as it's not a default hl2 texture so i can't check, but if it has "prop" or "model" somewhere in its name or in the file path, then you have another problem.
