In the first bit of instruction you said the clipping tool was on the right of the image, but it's on the left! :P

One thing I just discovered, this tool has a "memory" function similar to the brush tool. Clip something at any angle; this angle will be remembered the next time you use the tool, only if you do NOT adjust the second connection point. IE you will see only one point, but the cut line will match your last operation; clicking the tool button functions normally as well.
