(Note: This map originally reviewed on 23/4/01)

I recently reviewed King?s previous map ASDM01, and gave it a 4. I then saw a recent review on another review site that rated this map quite highly, so I was curious and reviewed it myself. I was quite surprised at how much better this recent Valve/Planet Half-Life contest entry was than the aforementioned attempt, and am glad to bring it to player?s attention.

This is one of a group of maps that I am reviewing from that contest that did not win, and was not included in the first ever Valve/Planet Half-Life pack issued recently. While I agree with whoever the judges were that this was not the winning map, it is still damn good, and should have made it into the map pack. Maybe there should be another map pack, but I really doubt that will happen.

King did not use any new textures or sounds other than those simple ones included in the contest PHL.wad file (included with this map zip file), but like other quality maps, there is a nice use of standard textures and lighting. This map takes place in mostly indoor storage and control rooms on several floors, but also has some nice outdoor areas for variety.

King states in his included text file that this map is intended to promote a higher frag count, so he eliminated the health & armor re-charges. That does make for a lot more kills and is an idea that a lot more maps could utilize.

The layout is easy to learn, and has a great flow for you to run around. It also has enough variety with halls, stairs, rooms, and a nice outdoor tower above a water pool. Even if you play this map with fewer players, you will easily run into other opponents. If you get bored you can have fun going around and shooting out all the glass throughout the map, which adds to better fragging.

There is a well done conveyer belt room that makes it hard (but not impossible) to get the gluon gun before being zapped by the red laser. The lighting is great throughout the map with a nice job on the custom spotlight in the stairwell. The weapons placement is really well done, and makes for a lot of fun fights, although I did not find the tau gun (it may be there somewhere?I just didn?t find it.)

The R_speeds are excellent throughout the map, and I found no evidence of any leaks, despite the nice curved walls and hall ways in several places. If you want to play jack-in-the-box and pop up for those surprise kills, you will find plenty of cargo boxes to keep you happy.

Verdict

Well thought out and constructed for lots of fun fragging battles.

Design
There are some nice quality control room panels, and breakable glass windows that give this a realistic storage and control depo

Gameplay
This is really this map?s trump card. King made it to have a lot of fun and furious fragging battles, and he did a great job wi

Verdict
Well thought out and constructed for lots of fun fragging battles.

Pros
Better than asdm01.

Design
Isn't a sequel to asdm02. No re-chargers.
