Faction was the first map made by KungFuSquirrel using this set of custom textures, and I have to say he did a pretty good job of it. Now who would not want to play a map that looks great with new textures? I had fun playing this map (got lost a bit) and I?m sure you?ll have fun playing it as well.
Most of the textures in the level are custom and, this is the first level I have seen put custom textures to good use. No misalignments or anything of the sort to report. Again, if your looking for a map with bad texture usage, go look elsewhere. As for architecture, it is great also. Mixed with the textures it could have made for an interesting storyline, which the author forgot about. Maybe something along the lines of the movie Aliens (which is the first thing that came to mind when the map loaded on my computer)
Few things to complain about in the level, first would be a grill on the floor of the 3rd floor which, to my surprise wasn?t fixed with a clip brush. I managed to loose a match versus myself with the RPG because of this. I think it would have been more interesting with it. The outdoorsy area of the map looks a little out of place to me and the cliffs there look repetitive texture wise. As far as ambience, maybe a little darker lighting would have improved the mood, as for sounds, I think KungFuSquirrel did a nice job there.
A nice elevator pushes the player up to the next level. And for some reason there was a teleporter sprite in the wall which looked kind of weird. A button with the famous Duke Nukem 3D symbol was, well, strange as I couldn?t figure out what it did. [edit] oops, finally figured out that the Duke Nukem symbol opened doors to the teleporter. [/edit]
All in all, the level played well, with nice texture boosting the architecture design. Maybe too many weapons bunched up together, but other than that gameplay follows nicely. Conectivity, while not the best, is good enough to get the player from point A to B fast enough so long as you don?t get lost.
Design
Nicely done with the exception of a few rough spots.
Gameplay
Pray you don?t get lost the first time you play this level.
Verdict
Nice map to play, so long as you don?t get lost too much.
Pros
Nice textures and architecture.
Design
A few things to iron out, but nothing too serious.
