Introducing SnarkPit v7

Out of the ether arrives the new SnarkPit—refreshed, modernized, and ready for your map browsing pleasure. Short of a site redesign, we chose to modernize the classic layout, carefully updating it to work cleanly across today's devices and browsers, yes even on mobile. Give it a try!

While it was tempting to cram in a plethora of new features, we decided to focus on what makes the Pit special. The result is a host of quality-of-life improvements that stay true to the spirit of the original site without undermining its core experience. v7 is more than just a fresh coat of paint though; the entire site was rebuilt from the ground up with modern best practices, delivering the fastest and smoothest experience the Pit has ever had. Search is lighting quick, navigation is snappy, and everything just feels better.

This November, the Pit turns 25 years old—a remarkable milestone for any website, and while the activity on the site isn't what it once was, we hope our improved live-reply forum system will make it easier than ever for old and new faces alike to drop in and say hello!

None of this would have been possible without the incredible help of our very own Penguinboy—longtime community member and creator/owner of TWHL, a cornerstone of the Half-Life mapping scene since the early days. If you map for Valve games, you owe it to yourself to stop by TWHL and see the lively community thriving there.

After a few close calls during the pandemic and years of shaky server support, we weren’t sure the Pit would make it. Now, we’re happier than ever to see it continue as a touchstone of the mapping community.

Welcome to SnarkPit v7. Enjoy exploring, and happy mapping.

Half-Life 2 20th Anniversary Update

Half-Life 2 turns 20 today, and Valve sprung yet another excellent 2 hour documentary onto the community along with much needed modernization updates to the base game. You can check out all the updates on the dedicated Half-Life 2 20th anniversary update page here: half-life.com/en/halflife2/20th/

And if you're like me and enjoy reading update change logs, you'll be pleasantly surprised to hear of a lot of the original bugs we all complained about back in the day finally getting addressed. Not to mention in-game Steam workshop support to make it even easier to load up mods and maps, and a new developer commentary mode giving even further insight behind a lot of the original game development decisions.

While the internet and gaming industry have evolved significantly since the original release in 2004, we can all agree half-Life 2 still stands as a testament to Valve's commitment to innovation, and unbridled support for the communities that grew up around it. Something still uncommon in this industry 20 years on.

It's a great time to share the game that redefined what games can be, and get inspired all over again.

Now, pick up that can.

Half-Life 25th Anniversary Update

In case you missed the Steam alert already, Valve in their usual discreet and unexpected way, released an update to their original 1998 masterpiece Half-Life for its 25th anniversary. The announcement included most notably a new hour-length documentary where the original team was brought back together to share their never-before-heard stories behind creating the original game, and challenges they faced as a young game development studio in the 90s.

Additionally, the game itself received some long overdue modernization updates like user interface scaling for higher resolutions, proper Steam Deck support, as well as brand new content, including four new original multiplayer maps by Valve that push the limits of what the original Gold Source Engine can do, and three other multiplayer maps originally released in 1999 as bonus content are all now brought together in this update. Also, the original Half-Life main menu artwork is back to set the mood as originally envisioned.

You can read about all the updates on Valve's Half-Life 25th Anniversary page here.

If you've been thinking about getting back into, or always wanted to try Gold Source, Source, or Source 2 mapping, you couldn't find a better time than now while the holidays are upon us to download the software developer kit (SDK) for your favorite Valve game and jump right in! Great starting places are the official documentation provided by Valve:
Half-Life (Gold Source) SDK Docs
Half-Life 2 (Source) SDK Docs
Half-Life Alyx & Counter-Strike 2 (Source 2) SDK Docs

As always, we're eager to show our support and review your maps and mods here on the Pit! Happy 25th Half-Life anniversary, and happy mapping!
