Competition Deadline

Wed Jul 28th 2004 at 8:13am by Leperous

The deadline for competition maps is now Sunday 8th August; this is due to my current out-of-the-country situation rather than the usual deadline whining that goes on

2004 Mapping Competition

Sun Jul 18th 2004 at 4:39pm by Gwil

There's just 13 days left to get your entries finished and polished up for the competition, so get mapping folks

The potential number of entrants is looking fairly large, and the pretty much "blank canvas" approach we opted for this year has encouraged standards to be higher than ever!

So, if you haven't started already, fire up hammer and get on with it! Even i'm entering this time around!

Sorry about that, server gremlins ate the website's database when I was away for a few days. There seems to be a problem with a few of the tutorials, but everything else is working fine.

2004 Mapping Competition

Tue Apr 27th 2004 at 11:55am by Leperous

We've been discussing this in the forums, and a lot of people seemed to want a 'themed' contest, and a lot seemed to want 'flat-shaded' maps. Some peons even wanted texture limitation, and I personally wanted to have 'incorrect dimensions'.

So, seeing as we're a democracy ruled by a dictator, we're going to have a themed competition, but what the theme is is up to you. Flat shaded, texture limitation, concept art again, too big/too small, whatever- make a map with some kind of twist to it. It's the last HL competition we're ever going to have, so go for it and make your last ever HL map! The only limitation is it should be a playable Half-Life Deathmatch map (i.e. have weapons and player starts, and not have stupidly high r_speeds). You can "retheme" existing, released maps if you want, but we will be biased against them unless there's a fairly radical change (this rule doesn't apply to existing but unreleased maps).

Bearing in mind it is the summer and a lot of people will be having exams, the deadline will be set for Sunday 1st August. Of course, should HL2 come out before that (you never know..!) the date will be changed. We'll also see about prizes and getting the entries properly judged this time! And seeing as it's quite a long time, we'll let you submit up to two maps.

If you're a bit confused or have any questions/comments, visit this forum thread. Entries sent to competition@snarkpit.com please!

We're thinking about having another competition. Check out this thread, and some pics of maps in development:

*I am in no way pre-biased towards the above maps

Just a quick note to say that you can now list Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament 2003/2004 maps here!

Map and possibly win $200!

Check out this thread for details on a mapping contest for CS, that has a prize of US$200; the competition is run by yonder ZTK clan and you can read some more on their website.

2 new boards, and Call Of Duty support!

Mon Jan 19th 2004 at 11:43am by Leperous

Just added 'Call of Duty' to the list of games here on the old 'pit; that means you can now add your maps, tutorials, and post on the CoD editing board. There isn't a lot here yet, but that should hopefully change over time- if it does, then I can look into expanding this site into other loads of other games, a la moddb!
There's also a new 2D/3D art board; this is for posting your textures, models, and general creativity-related stuff.

The SnarkPit game

Fri Dec 19th 2003 at 11:18pm by Leperous

Need to waste 5 minutes? Guide my head to stop 10 snarks from falling into the pit below, in this difficult and rather disturbing mini-flash game created by forum goon matt, praise or hate mail should be directed to this thread!

And the competition winner is...

In the next sentence  Broken Palace by Finger, closely followed by DM Ominous by Crackerjack and Vanguard by Reno. Thanks to everyone who entered; I'll be writing a short bit on each map and posting that up tomorrow, along with which I think should win.
