Until Scary-One started on Enraged, he didn't think he'd do another map for Half-Life. Just thinking of this map and the maps Steve has released in the past three years not ever being made sends shivers up my spine. If you don't know why, just take a look at the screenshots - particularly the first and third.

The architecture and lighting are what really make this map excellent. It's what we've come to expect from Scary-One - Wide open multi-level rooms with thick walls and floors that are covered in just the right texture and lit up by lights set to just the right color and brightness. Ugh, it's the second paragraph and I already sound like I'm on Scary-One's payroll - I can see how this review's going to turn out.

Weapon placement in Enraged is superb. The less powerful weapons are scattered throughout the level in various places, while the powerful weapons take planning and skill to get to. To get to the RPG you must board a slow moving platform, wait to get within jumping distance of a platform hanging from a ceiling, then longjump to yet another platform and finally pick up the RPG - While remaining in the open and vulnerable the entire time. To get to the crossbow you must use an underwater teleporter to get to a platform where you are an easy target for picking off.

The layout for this map is excellent. There are multiple exits to every area, and the paths lead from fragfest to fragfest to fragfest. Everything flows together excellently, and the added element of vertical combat makes things even better.

This is really sad. With a map that looks this good, you'd at least think I could complain about r_speeds. Nope, sorry. The wpoly count stayed under 400 most of the time and peaked around 740. Sorry, I'm disappointed in myself as well.

More than three years after its release, Enraged is still the most beautiful map for Half-Life Deathmatch. You pay with some slightly high r_speeds, but most machines of today should be able to handle it fine. Weapon placement and connectivity are all good...I hate to say this, but I really can't think of anything bad about this map. As a result, it receives the highest score ever given out here at the HLMC<!-- BBCode Start -->*<!-- BBCode End -->. Enraged is the closest thing to a perfect map that I've ever seen.

<!-- BBCode Start -->(Original final score at HLMC was 95/100. Rounds up to 10/10 here -hullu)<!-- BBCode End -->

Verdict

Enraged is the closest thing to a perfect map that I've ever seen.
