Map description:

Now in beta, finished, updates coming. Now has survival

V.0.9

A scavange gamemode map, Located in and around an English Rural pub, where the survivors find themselves trapped due to a storm,and a lack of fuel for there car.

Needs l4d2 addon support

When I saw there was a new map available for L4D2 and it had survival support, I downloaded it and played it this evening. One note: My graphic settings aren't maxed up, so things might look different on your computer.

I will start with the bad things first.

It's probably not clear to see where this is, but I was able to jump from the boxes, on a hedge, to an other but higher hedge. I was able to feel a clip node below my feet, but it's easy to get past it.

From that hedge, I was able to walk further and do 2 tricky jumps and managed to get myself out of the level.

This balcony is nice, but I don't really like the view from it. The fog doesn't match the skybox color, which makes it look kinda odd. I think this map looks much better without fog at all. Not sure if that results in different issues though.

(Taken in thirdperson mode) It's kind of unrealistic to be able to walk on this small ledge. A clip node should prevent players from walking on there.

It's cool to have a playground in the map.. but.. how could the kids ever get on that wood structure (don't know the right word)? It seems unfinished.

Some other things:
  • The first time I started the finale there were no common infected, only a few special infected. After 4 minutes they finally spawned. The second play time they spawned immediately after I started the finale.
  • There are still scavenge gas cans in the map and you can even do all the scavenge stuff while playing in survival mode
  • On some places you can easily see the end of the map
  • The tank suicides a lot
  • The grass is flat, my advice is to make it a displacement to add some hills.
  • The cars aren't prop_physics. This is a shame because it would be nice to have tanks to be able to actually throw the cars.
Now, these were the bad things. Here are the good things:

Wow, I don't know what you did here, but this area gives a very amazing atmosphere \ feeling. It's a shame though that the props in the distant fade away so quickly when you're not close to them. You can fix this by going to the prop options, and changing Fade Scale from 1 to 0,5 or something close to that.
Maybe it happens because the graphics aren't maxed up on my computer, but even then it would be nice to see them from further away.

This roof looks very nice. Nothing to say about it tbh.

Some other good things:
  • The thunderstorm in this map is really cool
  • The rooms look nice
  • Much variation
  • If not as buggy as this anymore, I'm sure it will be a very fun map.
When a new version has been released, I will definitely download it and have a look again. I'm sure this is going to be a great map!

Thanks for the review Niborius, I started the map about 3 days ago, and have been working on it constantly. You've spotted a few things i've missed that i'll fix xD

Will update again tomorrow

Not sure why the commons don't spawn though

Update Logs:

V.0.8 changes:

-More infected hiding places.
-More infected ladders.
-Lowered the balcony railing slightly.
-Changed 3d skybox to a better looking one.
-Added sound to far generator box.
-Updated The pubs interior.
-Updated Pub Exterior.
-Spread cans out more evenly.
-fixed, and added more Med packs, Adrenalin, Pain Pills, Guns, Melee weapons, Defibs into the map.
-Added more windows, also with infected ladder into some.
-Added more Door frames.
-Added break walls, And The visible sign of a breakwall for infected players to hide in, and commons to spawn in mobs from.
-Added more lights upstairs, and onto the balcony.
-Moved some cans around into better positions, gameplay wise.
-Added crashed truck in car park, to break up LOS, Add more common spawns/infected player chance to hide behind it.
-Finished Upstairs area.
-Added vent in bars, backroom.
-Textured all the bathrooms.
-Commons now spawn on the map.
-Fixed weapons not spawning in map.
-Updated vpk files

v.0.9

-Added Survival Gamemode.
-Few small texture fixes.
-Optimization. (NoDraw on unseen faces)
-Some item fixes.
-Fixed Bots not climbing stairs in Pub.

V.1.0

-Editied Fog, and skybox to look better.
-Made Scavenge Cans only spawn in Scavenge, and not appear in Survival.
-Generator now also only appears in Scavenge. and Not in survival.
-Clip Nodes on small ledges, and hedges clip.
-Fixed window of right of pub.
-Props in side, and lights out side now fade away from a more realistic distance.
-Added some more small decorations into theinterior of the pub, like pictures, and more plants.
-Nav improvements, Commons should spawn more in game, and get stuck less.

V.2 (Complete)

-Added more Primary and Secondry weapons, And more items (eg, Pipebombs, bile)
-Weapons have moved position, to balance the map out more.
-Improved Sounds
-Improved Rain

-Fixed shadows on Pictures inside pub
-File name renamed so Survival times are reset for the finished version

V.4 (Update)

-Changed Bsp name to reset survival times for final version of map
-Fixed pipe bomb and molotov counts, so they only give out 1 not 5
-Fixed the map some times having texture errors in some places
-Placed a magnum in the map
-fixed survivors clipping infected ladders

Here is my review I wrote originally on l4dmaps.com, I am placing it here as well to let everyone know this map has increased a lot since my last review.

Pros:
  • Very fun to play in scavenge
  • Nice weather effects
  • Gas cans spawn at positions you expect them to be at
  • Very playable for both the survivors and the special infected
  • Great atmosphere.. Really feels like you're there.
  • No problems with nav meshes
Cons:
  • No displacements (doesn't change the fun of the map though)
  • Survivor mode is not near as fun as scavenge on this map (not your fault probably)
  • You can feel the infected ladders as survivors
  • Could use a 3D skybox with background buildings
Conclusion:

I've played this map plenty of times with you and those times where just great. This is definitely my favorite scavenge map now. I have to admit I haven't played scavenge so much though, just a bit on Dead Center and The Parish.

The bots never get stuck.. same goes for the infected.
I think the map could use a 3D skybox though with some buildings or something.
The size of the map is great as well.

Good job on this map, there are some cons but I am sure you can work those out in your future projects.
