I was just wondering if the textures.wad was the only file that is
standard with steam. The reason I ask is because I wanted to use a
certain (vent) texture that I know is in the map DM_lockdown, but I
didn't know the name of the texture. So I loaded up the .vmf that came
with the recent update of said map, found the brush that I knew had the
texture I wanted, but as it turns out, I don't have the texture in my
textures.wad. I assume that if there is no other wad ATM I need to add
to hammer, and that the texture I'm looking for was compiled into the
map. Hopefully there is a simple solution, if not, I wouldn't mind
finding a custom wad, then compiling the neccesary textures into the
map I make (well, that's if I learn how compile textures into .bsps
againe  ). I would appreciate any help, thank you.

HL2 and Source doesn't use wadfiles. The textures.wad is just in there because there seems to be a bug with not loading the materials (new texture files for Source engine) when there are no WADs listed.
The dm_lockdown texture is one of the prop_vents textures, which is auto-loaded when you open maps using the HL2 configuration and not the CS:Source configuration in the SDK launcher.

yea, I was sure I was wrong in calling the textures wads, so the only
way I could use the vent texture would be by using the vent model in a
map, then after the compilation the model will show up textured
in-game? As for the configs, I haven't figured out how to change them
to fit HL2's needs and CS: S, I think the configs I am using now are
the default CS: S settings, would there be a tut for setting up hammer
for HL2, and even HL2 DM? I tried searching but I couldn't find one (or
maybe I missed it).

When you run the SDK launcher, just select HL2 from the dropdown box @ teh bottom.
You can use the texture on world brushes by using the props/vent texture that you want. Or you could use a model, which indeed would show up textured in-game. And in-editor, as well
