I'm trying to build an old style burning torch.

In hammer I can see the flames (fire.spr) and I've got rid of the black block. I'm specifying sprites/fire.spr in the entity Sprite Name property. I know HL must be finding the sprite, because the maps crash out on load when it can't. Trouble is, the flaming sprite doesn't show up, just the torch (which looks exactly like the wood textured spike it is).

Any suggestions on what settings I've got wrong? I'm having similar problems with the glow sprite I'm trying to add.

Probably setting the rendering properties incorrectly- don't use an FX Amount of 0 with render mode of additive/texture

i find that the fire.spr looks best with RM: additive FX: 255

you may have forgot to set the fx ammount...opps :razz:

I'm trying to find a way of 'putting' a light 'inside' the flame of the torch so it will light the surrounding area more effectively. Can anyone suggest a good sprite (or godd settings for a light, light_spot or light_environment) that does this effectively. I've seen the efect in some maps so I know it can be done.

a simple light ent with an orange color would look nice.

you also might want to look into triggering setups for the light ent so it flicekrs, flashes on/off with your fire sprite.

I) Use a "light" entity

II) DON'T use a flicker, it looks like garbage and gives people seisures...the only acceptable style I've seen for flames is actually "underwater" which I don't know if it exists in any .fgd files other than DoD.

III) Generally a good gold colour/light orange colour looks good for a flame.
