I've been playing around with displacement maps, and I can't get sew to do anything. I have two surfaces of the same power that I want to "stitch" together. Normally I would just put them even and create two displacement maps that line up perfectly, but I'm trying to make a terrace as easily as possible, and this isn't work very well, and it seems like sew would be the easiest way to do this (if it worked the way I assume it works, which it apparently doesn't).
Anyway, the reason I don't want to go into vertex mode and edit the brush that way (line it up, so that I have two even sides to create/use) is because then my texture doesn't aline correctly (it's a cliff face, with a fringe of grass at the top. I could try rotating the texture, but this would screw up a great many things, and probably isn't worth the effort.
Anyway, I'm not really posting to get a problem fixed, per se, as I know how to work around it. I really just want to know how I could use the sew tool.
Thanks for the replies,

if your sew tool is not working chances are that your serfaces dont line up correctly make sure that the lines from both displacements line up perfectly in 2d mode if they dont the sew tool wont work. corners need to touch on only one vertex ,face other wise it wont work (ignore dots needed for spacing)

that should help

Ok, thanks for the reply, still need some clarification, though.
So as long as I have the displacement map set up as you suggest the "sew" tool will stitch them together when I select them both and hit "sew"?
Also, I don't understand some of your drawings? The last two, specifically.. what makes them different? And.. well.. generally, could you explain your drawings a little better? what are the equals signs? the --- and the ____? I assume the | are vertical edges, right?

Actually different lengths will still sew together. The best and most useful case is when you have a large 24 displacement connected to a 23 one of half the edge length. As long as the original brushes start out connected at the same level it will sew. But it will only come out clean if all the verts line up on each, otherwise you just have cracks between the surfaces anyways.
disp = displacement
1st one: a horizontal disp. and a vertical disp, but their edges do NOT line up flush. (doesnt work)
2nd: a horizontal disp and a vertical disp. but their edges DO line up flush. (works)
3rd: 2 horizontal disps, on the horizontal the edges line up, but they do not line up on the vertical as they are on different levels (doesnt work)
4th: 2 horizontals with edges lining up flush at same X and Y components (works)
5th: 2 horizontals with edges of different lengths but lining up flush. It works but only if all the vertices of each disp edge line up together.
6th: dunno
Also as a tip, you almost never need sew. When you create the brushes to start out they should be naturally sewn since they are just flat. From there just always select both displacements when you are editing vertices near/at the corner.
