I know theres a lot of people here who know a lot more about HL1's netcode than I... I come to seek your guidance.

I know CS1.5 works perfectly well for LAN games. But could it be played over the internet anymore? Could I start a server that people could join, by connecting using my IP address?

Wouldn't work, methinks.

Maybe you could hack it to think the server as one on LAN. Google.

You can't run CS 1.5 directly. I'm guessing it runs off the WON
servers, which were taken down a long time ago. There is an alternative
though. I don't know how legal this is, but try the Steam Less Project
at http://www.steamlessproject.nl

There's a CS1.5 patch available at their projects page
http://www.steamlessproject.nl/v2/index.php?lang=en&pagenms=pagenms/moreapps&page=moreapps

The HL version worked fine. In fact, it looked like the servers had
less cheaters on them than the WON-era servers used to. I 'm guessing
CS should also work well.

Yer, I saw it in the top 100 online played games. Only has about 1000 players worldwide.

The whole idea of this is to play without steam... but thanks for your input.

You can't play any of the valve games online without steam ... that's kind of the point.

I'm sure you can install 1.5 as a 3rd party mod or something as such and it should work.

You'd have to set up servers and such on your own, I'm sure you can find a cs 1.5 dedicated server patch somewhere. I don't see why that wouldn't work, since you'd be giving the people the IP address to connect to. (unless the ded. servers tried to connect to steam or won machines ... it'd take some cracking past this point)

Sorry if these aren't the answers you wanted to hear.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I have 1.5 without Steam, since I saved my SIERRA file when I got
Steam. However, you can't play online. But we still play
alot of TFC with it and such during LAN parties.

I think it could work, by directly typing in an IP. Unfortunately I dont have anyone with a stable internet connection and HL1 installed to test this with. If that doesnt work, the link Frag posted looks good.

No it won't, HL1 has this thing where it likes to authenticate with WON servers to check its alive. Steam is your only option, and will probably make the game easier to get working and find other players.

Steamless Project eliminates the need for Steam.

In other words, you don't need Steam to run CS if you use this.

You listening Myrk?
