Try giving a better explanation.

Any pictures? Can you explain more about your problem and anything involved?

As far as I know there is no standard for hd jumpers so you will have
to look on the hd and look for a chart. You will most likely want
to set it to slave (assuming your old one is set to master).
Failing that you can always guess and check.

Also be sure to use the same IDE ribbon as your old hd and put this one at the end of
the ribbon.

Yeah, it'll say on the drive ... or you can tell us what drive it is and look it up online. There's no general standard, since, it would determine how the circuit is constructed on the logic board.

However, each company has their own "standard" (rarely abandoned).

They try to show the "standards", but the IBM one is pretty close to wrong. Don't know what you have, but in any case it IS listed directly on the drive. Only very old HDDs have no listing.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Well, then the "slave" setting is the two vertical pins second from the right. (It should say this on top of the drive with the label)

If you're having other problems it may be because you're mixing SATA with PATA. I don't know, you haven't given much information.

By the way, just try it. It'll be a vertical connection, so, you only have to try four times to figure out the right one. It wont hurt anything, if that's what you're thinking. All jumpers do is complete a connection.

[EDIT]
He aimed me and it's fixed now. Turned out he not only didn't have the drives "jumped" properly, but the board had RAID enabled, which wasn't set up.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.
