The best tool I have found is Fraps. It's only 20 bucks (unless you find a pirate copy). It doesn't extract any .bmp's but rather makes an avi straight from the get go WITH SOUND (if you want sound). You can configure it to go at a push of a button.

Now once the .avi is made you will want to use another program like Adobe Premier to convert the .avi that Fraps makes into a more compressed .avi since Fraps makes it's .avi uncompressed (huge filesize).

The file size will be huge so make sure you have a nice fatty hard drive.

I have yet to make a movie using Fraps (still gathering material). It sure would have saved me hours and hours of work that came with converting over 150,000 .bmp's into .jpg's, converting the image sizes from 1024x768 to 640x480, importing all those .jpg's into .avi software, adding music cause no sounds from the game were present, and hours and hours of compile times.

I have made 12 movies of ingame footage from Opposing Force. Fraps would have saved me days of work.

$20.00 well spent.

Premiere? You can do free video conversion from/to AVI using VirtualDub. It won't edit, but it converts with just about every codec you have (except Microsoft's proprietary ones). Plus it has support for filters. http://www.virtualdub.org/

If you need MPEG-1 then use tmpgenc. It can also use VFAPI plugins to do filters, and its high quality noise reduction is pretty damn good. http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html

If you find yourself with an ASF, you can dump it to AVI using ASFTools. Getting the sync correct is a pain though, and you may have to do things like extract the audio separately and do time-correction on it to match the video. http://www.geocities.com/myasftools/

This website provides free information about converting video. It's geared towards making MPEGs for Video CDs but you may find something there. www.vcdhelp.com
