I was buying chapstick today when I noticed one of those flowery type
greeting cards. There was a watercolor painting of a sunrise and
this underneath:
Rabindranath Tagore said:
Death is not extinguishing the light; it is putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.
I'm not religous, I don't believe there's an afterlife, and maybe it's
because I'm so lightheaded from giving blood today, but something about
the quote really grabbed me. So much so that I walked back to my
room and created a thread just to showcase it, and any other quotes
worth sharing.

I'm sure many of you have quotes you particularly like (I know Juim
shared one with us in the Philosophizer's thread recently) or that you
live by etc.

Here's the place.

Wasn't there already a "Favorite Quotes" thread?

Anyways, here's a good one;

Yes there was, but it was favorite movie quotes and the threads locked now.

Just to illustrate the differences between the two here's the lead off quote from that thread:
$loth said:
I would have to say that my fav quote froma movie would have to be from LOTR when gollum/smeagle calls sam a 'Fat little Hobbit'.
Whats your favourite?
So, to the best of my knowledge a serious type quote thread hasn't been done before.

Before I made my thread I searched "Quote" and the only relevant thread it turned up was Sloths.

I just researched except this time I searched "Quotes" and the thread you started last May came up.

I feel silly now especially since I posted in the thread ... but its
funny that you barely remembered your own thread. I guess I
wasn't zealous enough in my searching the first time.

Dark Tree just pointed out that I'm an idiot.

I somehow forgot about Orphs Recently Quoted thread.

Talk about forum faux pas.

"Better to be pissed off, than pissed on"

own personal take on it; better for people to be angry with you than walk all over you (fairly literal)

EDIT: due to italic glitches it took me around 7 or 8 times to even
make the above postable... insert the obvious "if first you dont...."

If at first you don't succeed, give up and try something else.

If life gives you lemons, choke on 'em and die. You stupid lemon eater.

My freshman year in College the roommates across the hall never seemed
to get along. Chris was a good guy, a rugby player with a
tendency to get really drunk. His roommate Jamie was a ferrety
type who no one really liked and he always seemed to be pissed off for
no good reason.

In the middle of the night after an evening of drinking, Chris climbs
down off the top bunk and proceeds to piss all over Jamie. It may
sound terrible but everyone on the hall gave Chris a pat on the back
when they heard what happened, even though Chris claims he can't
remember doing it. Jamie, of course, was furious about it
all. He requested a room change and effectively kicked Chris out
of the room. The next day, an anonymous joker wrote on their
whiteboard: "Jamie: either pissed off or pissed on"

I enjoyed it at least

Now for a good quote from the opening of Giving Up the Gun:
Charles Lamb said:
<div style="text-align: center;">Alas! Can we ring the bells<br style="font-style: italic;">
backward? Can we unlearn the arts<br style="font-style: italic;">
that pretend to civilize and then<br style="font-style: italic;">
burn the world? There is a march of<br style="font-style: italic;">
science; but who shall beat the drums<br style="font-style: italic;">
for its retreat?

<div style="text-align: left;">

Humans aren't at the centre of the universe. - DEVO

Better to be in denial than to be human.

Bill Gates understands binary: his company is number one, and his customers are all zeros.
