I have a problem with an IP setting on Windows and was wondering if anyone here knew how to sort it out.

The PC went away for a replacement motherboard (the onboard graphics were causing problems) and came back today. Trying to connect to the internet through the Netgear router (or just trying to connect to the router) is seemingly impossible now, but I think I've found the cause. I tried to refresh the network by going into a command window and typing:

ipconfig
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

The IP given was very different in that it claimed to be a 192.168.44.something, rather than a 192.168.0.something. It refused to release or renew the settings, claiming that I didn't have access to do so. According to the connection window, the IP has been set manually.

The question is, how do I unset it or change it? I suspect that someone was messing around with the PC for some reason and changed it whilst it was being repaired. Any ideas? And yes, I Googled (a lot) for it.

Go in to your network properties bit (Win XP the Network connections folder (this is in Contril Pannel)) find the connection and then right click on it go to properties, In the list it should have find the one labed Internet Protocol click on it and click properties and then change your ip to what ever you want it to be.

Thanks! Worked a treat and everything seems to be working fine now!

It's one of those things that I wanted to know how to do for a while, and despite trying to look it up couldn't find it anywhere.
