I haven't touched hammer in a while, but recently I noticed models sometimes explode apart in hammer when you turn your view, then reassemble when you turn again. They also rotate around funny points sometimes and do crazy stuff.

Anyone else got this?

Also, why the hell aren't models pre-coded with the type of model they are, or is there a list of all the HL2 models and what prop type they should be?

I don't think it matters what kind of prop it is unless you're making a phyiscs object and in that case you can use a physics override to use any type of prop ... I'm not sure though as I haven't really tried it myself and I haven't ran into this problem, oddly enough.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I think you mean this: http://www.snarkpit.net/forums.php?forum=6&topic=6901&4

Solved it for me.

I still miss the "textured shaded" mode for the 3D windows ;(
