Well, I recently found... a brand new GeForce 8800 GTS 512 in my PC case.

So, naturally, I'm interested in some of the new DX10 effects, but I can't get myself to buy Vista. It's so... meh.

Anyways, one of the older DX10 in XP hacks (Alky-Project) failed but a group of Russian programmers has already released RC1 of a DX10 version for XP. From what I heard there is no reasonable explanation for why DX10 should not work in XP, it's all MS-monopolism trickery.

Here's the link
Unfortunately, it's only google-translated from Russian. Still great news. And kinda embarrassing for Microsoft.

I haven't tried it yet, but it sure looks interesting.

I remember when the original project to which you refer was announced and discussed at length in the technology press.

The conclusion was (somewhat inevitably) that indeed DX10 could be made for Windows XP, but this would still require an awful lot of work and it is certainly not in Microsoft's interest to spend $$$ developing DX10 support for a product nearing the end of its lifecycle.

While this may eventually prove annoying for those of us who prefer XP to Vista, I doubt any independent group will have the resources to successfully complete the project. The best non-Vista option may well be if Cedega eventually provides a DX10 path.

Of course all this is to ignore the fact that DX10 effects can be accomplished in DX9 anyway, just nowhere near as efficiently. Since current hardware cannot provide playable framerates in DX10 games, and any image quality improvement is practically unnoticeable the whole thing seems largely irrelevant anyway.

A far more interesting debate is the current battle between RTRT/Intel and Rasterization/nVidia for the best way forward in future graphics rendering.

I wonder if reaper actually read that reply, as your reply doesn't show up for some reason larchy (I guess it was done off the newer forums?)

Well, I can see it now.

Anyway, I just dislike the way MS tries to force eye-candy hungry gamers to "upgrade" to Vista. Most effects seem to be possible in XP as well (maybe not through actual DX10 but with a simple workaround). The only argument they still bother to defend is performance but most DX10 games run slower than in DX9, even with some of the supposed DX10 exclusive features turned on. There still might be a difference but such a small one that no one would feel the need to get Vista.

My argument is always that the reason PC gaming is going down isn't the evil pirates in Sweden, it's the ridiculous prices you have to pay to get graphics anywhere near the quality advertised in screenshots and in-game previews.

You have to get a top of the line graphics card (which are getting cheaper but are still expensive) and to even use the higher quality effects you're supposed to pay another 90 euros for Vista? OK, the programmers want to buy food, but why not sell DX10 separately then? Why do I have to buy an entire operating system that I do not need? Maybe it runs a little better in Vista than XP, alright, but I hate the way they force you. Only MS can even try to do that without fearing huge losses, and I don't want to support them. I do want the shiny water-ripples, though. Shiny, shiny water-ripples.

You can see the reply on the thread, but it doesn't tally it up on "replies" on the overview page.

Very Interesting, I would love DX10 on XP rather than Vista. I have heard that DX10 will work better with the computer version of 'Assasin's Creed' but i haven't read anything on that situation.

My friends have been bugging me that they say DX10 is way better than DX9 yet i hardly see the diffrence (until you play Bioshock's first level swimming in the sea) yet i wouldn't mind having a little more 'looks' to my new games.
