Map Description

This is my first map for HL:DM.
DM_ArenaBunkers is a random map with bunkers and buildings.
I played a beta version with 2 friends some time ago, and fixed loads of bugs. Bugs like places where you can get stuck, or the sprite of the teleporter not being transparent.

Thanks to [GRAC]Myth and Louiesssss for finding most of them!

The map features:
  • Buildings with Crossbows
  • A box that can be opened, containing the longjump module
  • A castle (sort of) with a rocket launcher on top of it. There are also more weapons around it
  • Breakable wood around the castle
  • An underground cave
  • A secret area
  • A teleporter in the cave that sends you to the roof of the castle
And much more...

Sorry i mean everyone*.
Also, dm_arenabunkers_2 is in the make, and will feature alot more than the original arenabunkers.
One feature is a big mountain.

To everything that said something about the dumpster: did you know you could open it?

@aaron_da_killa:

Thank you for your time to check my map and see what it is like.
You are right, i was thinking about ambient sounds, but i thought "i'll just do that later" but i forgot it and now it's already on the snarkpit.

I'll make a new version right away, and i'll hope the features that you and Riven would like to see, will be included.

Besides, i didn't see any misaligning textures on ladders? Or are you talking about both sides of the ladders? Because that might be true.

And yeah, it's true that i was trying to add detail to most parts of the map. It's still an pretty empty map through, and there are way too less health kits.

+ Attempt at adding detail.
+ Effort in sophisticated level architecture.
+ Nice layout. Not a bad map for a beginner, if this is your first release I'd defiantly say your above par in terms of quality, my first map was way worse. It was a bit bare ofcourse and overall it was linear, but still decent none the less.

You made some attempts to add detail such as the poles and what looks to be a dumpster, plus all your lights had a light source which is something alot of new mappers forget.

You also put in a decent effort to have interesting architecture. You had a few interesting slants and quirks with the cave geometry which is good and I saw attempts to make the geometry more interesting and detailed in other parts of the map, not everything was box like.

The layout was nice, I can see myself having some fun on this. I thought you could have done something more interesting with item placement throughout the map. What is the reason for players to go into the caves? Perhaps you could have done something interesting where all the ammo and weapons are above ground and maybe the health and shields are below ground, so players will have to keep constantly moving. But what you did was fine.

You had misaligned textures especially on those ladders and lights, just watch out for that, they look pretty ugly and noobify the map. You also didn't have a single sound effect. Always try to add ambient sound effects to a map, they add atmosphere and immerse the player in the environment much more and just enhance the experience in general.

Anyway, its pretty apparent that your fairly new at mapping, but this is a decent map, you should feel very proud if this is your first or even second map. Just remember to add a bit more detail next time, spend that effort making sure the textures are all aligned and think about what your adding, if it can be done better and what effect it will have on the map. Also add ambient sound to the next map. Don't be afraid to add that extra effort to polish and refine the map, it certainly shows. Quality is more important than quantity.

Good stuff, I think this map deserves a 2.5/5 or a 3/5 which is a pretty high score actually if you think about it. I look forward to your next release :)

So I had a run through the map and I have to say, it's got a few things going for it. Even though it might be a little on the bare side, I wouldn't let that get in the way of the arena style setup it has going on for it. The weapons have nicely situated places. Places you'd expect them to be. The cave below is kind of nice. Bare as well, but still allows for interesting conflicts. I'm also glad you've spawned the super jump module ( I always like using that!)

The map is good for a first release. It could use more detail to give it 'atmosphere' but as we're all aware, none of that is necessary for a mp map to be popular. I would suggest looking at Valve's mp maps, and checking out what they do for 'atmosphere'. -What do I mean by that? -Well, something added to a map to hint at or suggest something beyond than what is actually there. Does the place have a history? What lies beyond the walls of the complex? why are the players there in the first place? These are things you can think about when designing your next map. Why should you bother? -Because these are things that make a difference between really well done maps, and those that are just focusing on one aspect.

It's a good first little HL:DM map and I think you are well on your way to creating some more interesting spaces if you begin to think about things other than just gameplay.

Keep it up!
