Good stuff

The first rooms arcitecture is nice.

I like the lights.

Bad stuff.

The rooms are a little tall, the entire place looks out of porportion to me.

The forth screen is a little bland.

You seem to have multiple themes going on at once. Namely the 1st screen and the halls, then just don't match.

Looks like a good start though, look forward to seeing this

Do you have any clue at all how irksome you are to 56k members Dark|Killer?

Never mind. Forget I asked.

Underdog, you should recommend a tool like Xat to people with such large screenshots (filesize-wise). Just like Orpheus did.

Anyway, I think the first screenshot looks more abstract than really
mansion-esque. A nice style nonetheless, but not really fitting with
what you're aiming for I think.

Second shot looks more like it, though it's still very rough (architecture and texture-wise) it's already more like a mansion.

Third shot looks less good, the texture choice clashes somewhat with
the modern shape of the lamps and the pillars. The hall looks too long
for a hl2dm map (players are slow so hallways and paths shouldn't be
too long).

Fourth shot looks strange. I can't make up what it's going to be yet.

Fifth shot looks more like it, though the same things apply here as
with the third shot: clashing styles and too long hallways for a hl2dm
map. I also assume you'll fix those window textures in the upper left
corner? They look out of place.

All in all, I think it's too early to give any real comments about it
but it's better to spot things early than too late. Good luck with
this.

I just found out about 45 minutes ago and the answer is "No freaking way"

I have been the butt of that joke for days now and I think that I would rather just stop a file download from now on. If these people are this rude, they don't need me adding my rudeness atop it. So from now on, if its to big, I will just move on.

BTW, the joke HAS run its course.

@Underdog. I couldn't really understand your post, but are you
upset at the references to Orpheus? The fervor with which you
(like Orpheus) champion 56k friendly images is uncanny -- and I think
it's something that Cpatain P was pointing out in good fun.

@DK. I agree with Captain P's comments that the long hallways
aren't great for gameplay. Also, the symmetry of the hallways (an
issue that was pointed out to me by both Underdog and Reno in one of my
own maps) detracts from the overall architecture I think.

Not even meant as a joke, I just saw the similarity between you and
Orpheus. And well, 300 KB is a lot for a 1024x768 screenshot, 56k or
not. I agree now with Orpheus when he said that could be optimized.

Aaanyway, Dark|Killer, do you have a layout worked out for this map already or are these screenshots style-tests or such?

Nevermind Guys.

You obviously have no clue what I was talking about, and frankly, I'd like to keep you in the dark.

I have been told endlessly about similarities. Its gotten old already.

56k is my problem. Not yours.

End of story.

Umm, well, the map's name is untitled yet, and 5% is completed, soo...

Thanks for your comments, i actually made 2 kinds of halls, for you to tell me which is better..

Is the greenish style better? (including lights and architcture)

Or is the yellowish bright hall better?? (including lights and architicture)

The 4th picture, with lights, is still unfinished, and the tall room, i
will add some props, as a design, those fiber like tunnels in the
citadel, simply some designs

And the upper-left windows in pic 5 is going to be fixed, all what i
have reached yet was made in 10 minutes...so i think that explains, i
dont have a major time to map, but this week, we will take 3 days off
becuase its the end of ramadan, (islamic tradition), so i may update it
with more stuff...

As for the abstract looking windows, it is what im looking forward to..

Well, for now, i just want you guys to tell me which style is nicer, and about anything else, here is my concept i drew:

User posted image

<span style="color: cyan;">Blue: Master Room

<span style="color: orange;">Orange: Other Routes to other halls...

<span style="color: red;">Red: Gardens

<span style="color: limegreen;">Green: Dining rooms

<span style="color: magenta;">Magenta: Halls

<br style="text-decoration: line-through; color: white;">
</span></span></span></span></span><span style="color: cyan;"><span style="color: orange;"><span style="color: red;"><span style="color: limegreen;"><span style="color: magenta;"><span style="color: silver;">Scrambled Lines: Extended part of map

<span style="color: gray;">Shaded Area: 1st Floor

The hall Mansion\Castle like building is
mainly on the 2nd floor, the 1st floor can be entered only by the large
dining room, which is 2 floors, and the large garden, which is in the
1st floor...

The layout shows a lot of double routes, in German they call it
Scheinalternativ which means fake alternative (I love that German word
 ). They can be good sometimes but I don't think that much are needed.
The map looks quite linear too without a real flow, some area's have
only one or two routes leading from/to them. That makes combat
predictable and encourages camping and a passive gameplay.

I've set the following rules for myself: I try to get at least 3 routes
from every area, I keep 6 as a sort of maximum. I also try to keep the
routes short, especially in hl2dm because you move so slow in it. I try
to keep routes as long as 2 seconds linear, then I think something
should happen like an intersection with another route, or better,
another area. This seems to work well as it often gives a lot of
action. It might be nice to differ somewhat with easier, calmer area's
for those players that like to stay calm now and then, that's something
you have to find out yourself, what you like and what not.

I usually go for about 3 - 5 main conflict area's, with some extra smaller area's sometimes.

Of course, this depends on the style of gameplay you're aiming for and
you'll need to test it yourself to see if you feel comfortable with it,
it's also good to have a gameplay insight (play the game you're mapping
for! ). Playtesting is important in early stages especially if you
feel uncomfortable with layouts.

Anyway, about the hallway, I like the white one more. The greenish one
feels less realistic, less fitting the texture choice. I like the
architecture of the greenish hall more, though.

It's funny how much like a minority group you are. Your one of a small
number of 56k users in a community of broadband users. Your down
trodden, the system doesn't work for you, your always trying to rise up
and protest, and your always lost in the numerous other ramblings
happening at the time. It's great! The SnarkPit has its own minority
group like a real nation. Two if you include Half-dude  .

I have searched my memory, as faulty as it is and tried to recall any time that I was unintentionally was rude to any 56k users. Sadly I cannot. Its not that I might not have been, its sad that it just never occurred to me.

In response to your post. I cannot for a moment imagine that I am the only 56k user who gets irked. I may be still new enough to be still complaining about it, but there is no way possible that I am alone. My sympathies to those who have had to deal with you guys longer.

I would be willing to bet that many of you have dolls at our homes with pins poked all through them in the hopes of some ill fortune befalling you in payment for your deeds. Its not that you do it, its that you do not stop doing it once you are made aware of your actions.

Sadly, there is no real way to make those people pay for their inconsiderate ways. One can only hope.

I must have been a real ass somewhere to be paying for it now.

I like the tall-narrow hallway theme, it looks cool and unique. You should exaggerate this even more. Make the hallway in pic 4 narrower, and the hallway in pic 5 taller. Also make sure the support beams are clipped so that if you run into one on the edge it doesn't stop you.

I meant no offense UnderDog, nor was I saying your an ass or rude to
56k users. Far far from it. I just found it interesting that like a
real world community that is made up of different groups, so is the
Snarkpit made up of different groups. I'm sure there are a number of
56k users, but they are in the minority compared to broadband users. As
fas as nationality goes we seem to have a large portion of US and UK
users, compared to those from Australia, Asia, South America, and else
where. In this case I'm in the minority, being from Australia. The fact
you mention every chance you get how unfriendly the Snarkpit is for 56k
users, so are you like minority groups who complain about other things.
And like in the real world, the majority of people don't often care. I
was merely making a sociological (think thats the right word) comment
 .

Anyway, sorry to slightly derail your thread Dark|Killer.

You guys, you have a unique way of making the victim feel guilty. You must have been practicing a long time because i works like a charm.

Anyway, Dark|Killer I have no real idea how to make your shots less a burden but it cannot be that difficult.

A quick search via Google came up with these options. I cannot vouch for any of them since I use none but one has got to work.

I think I will go now and sulk. I need to figure out why I feel badly now.

On a side note, has anyone ever noticed that "Google" does not pass the IE spell checker? That has me laughing considering that Google is a bit more used than IE these days.
