Big Scientists... need I say more?

http://www.wil5on.250free.com/bigsci/bigsci.zip</A>

The file is about 4mb, if you got a decent connection dl it and tell me what you think. For all you 56k users, or you just dont want to dl it, I'll post screens eventually. Or, post screens yourself (show me what you like about it... or not).

BTW, its a full single player adventure mod, with lame imitations of parts from HL/OpFor.

wil5on,

That was amusing. I think its great so far and there's not too many kinks that need to be worked out of what is already there. Maybe making some of your own textures or something.

Some of the Military Guys were attacking me instead of the giant scientist though, in the growth chamber.

I especially like the tiny scientists who replaced the cockroaches.

The actual map layout was good. It felt very much like Half-Life, more so like Opposing Force, but it felt close. One other thing I think that would make it better, becides completion would be a more coherent story, even if its total crap, it would tie everything together and make the mod even funnier.

Loved the MOD...You just mapped it too fast [Buggy, ugly, and un-entertaing in parts], and you could still actually kill the scientists  [Shoot the invisable bitch near the legs!]

But, I still liked it.

My favorite part was hitting the 'use' button and taking one as my pet. THEN BURING HIM.

Glad to see so many ppl like my mod.

Yeah, Vash, I know you can kill the scientists by shooting between the feet. Thats a limitation of the engine... same deal with the hgrunts that shoot you.

BTW, if anyone is interested, the hgrunts that shoot you are the ones that rappel from the ceiling. Its all to do with the spirit DLL.

I dont plan on doing any more work on the mod, other than fixing mapping bugs. If you can find any bugs, post them here, though Im pretty confident there arent any.

The idea is great; the level deisgn is terrible.

Good things:
  • Big scientists
  • Little scientists
  • The ending concept (won't spoil it)
  • r_speeds
  • Quirky humour
Bad things:
  • Scientists don't rampage. In fact, they don't really do anything. There are no real monsters here, so no gameplay as such.
  • Boring architecture
  • Bright, flat lighting with no atmosphere (I can see why you didn't post screenshots).
  • Dodgy hitboxes with scientists. Was I supposed to kill them, or what? Seemed like the next door opens once you kill a scientist so....
  • Evil, evil zip file structure. You should not give people a chance to overwrite their HL files
  • Event bugs - need to noclip if you fall down the dam wall, for example
  • Overall cheesiness
  • Quirky humour
I admire your efforts to make something original with HL. I feel that originality is deeply lacking in most maps, and to me it is essential for mapping.

However, funky ideas do not a good map make. It has to play well too, and it ought to look and sound good. The trouble with original ideas is that it is a lot harder to make them work properly. It seems to me like you've put all your effort into the ideas and not bothered with the overall map quality.

Most of all, it's missing some gameplay.

Like I said, hitboxes arent scaled cos of the engine. I would have scaled the actual models, but I dont have a program to do that with (my 30-day trial for milkshape ran out :heee: ).

Uh... sorry bout that. I'll make it clear in the map description what you have to do to install it, hope this doesnt happen again.

If you fall down the dam wall, you should die 99% of the time...

Thats the idea! But surely I shouldve got points for spoofing the opfor intro!

Oh and by the way, theres a secret thing I dont think anyone heres seen... if so they havent mentioned it. Play the hazard course. There are a few... interesting comments placed throughout it.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that the intro spoof was very funny. The moment when a giant scientist head glides past is one of the more surreal things I've witnessed in HL
