I want to create a kind of a drain in the middle of a room (for which I
used the arch in the floor tutorial), but now I need slime or dirt
running to it, as if someone used a rusty iron broom to wipe dirty
stuff to the hole. How do I get this effect?

I've tried some stain decals, but I couldn't rotate them, so I took overlays instead, but:

this always takes large purple boxes with it, that obstruct the view.
Also, I don't get a very realistic effect. Does anyone want to give me
some tips on how I can achieve this?

(and: can I fiddle around with the floor a tad, so that the drain
actually is a bit lower than the rest of the floor, with a kind of
slightly declining slope towards the hole?)

Your best bet here would probably be a custom slime overlay with a
spectral map. er, in case you dont know what the hell im talking about,
basically you need to make yer own slime overlay thats shiny...

This isnt the easiest solution but it is the best...

Also, the purple boxes you see in hammer only mark the entities
(overlays are actually entities)... they shouldnt show up in game, but
i agree, i can make getting the right effect a pain, especially with
small overlays.

To rotate you should just be able to left click on the overlay box (well, it does have some uses  ) and then you should get the little rotation circles so you can rotate yer texture.

I suppose you could just slope the floor too, but that would look crappy, and to be honest, a little too half-life 1...
