I like the retro style, but indeed, the lights need some work.
And I know this is the HL:gold engine, but try to add some more models and props to it .. the rooms look a bit empty now.

Unless HL:Gold means the very original HL... Iduno.. but I can't model AT ALL. I've been building candelabras and braziers out of brushwork and it's worked fine for me

I love the lighting effect in the first pic.
You need a better transition between floor/wall/ceiling. Maybe a border/trim where the wall meets the ceiling? Details like that create stability. The place looks a bit like the whole ceiling comes down any minute. Oh and of course: wall columns!
