In the past few days strange things have happend to my computer. Not anything really big, but a lot of strange, small problems have arisen.

For example:
  • The Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V commands to copy and paste don't work.
  • When I tried to uninstall a program from my comp it didn't work because the "Windows installer" couldn't be found.
  • In the activity field (I don't know if it's called that in english because I have the swedish version of windows), to the left of the Start button, nothing appears when I'm running a program.
  • It takes an eternity to log in on Windows.
  • Some programs won't start at all, for examle MSN Messenger.
  • A shutdown message sometimes appears giving me 1 minute before the computer shuts down.
  • The Windows key won't work.
  • Internet sites won't work correctly, for example here at Snarkpit, when I click the "xx users online" or "Smiley" buttons it won't work. Some links don't work either.
That's the problems I can think of right now. Maybe all these problems have something to do with the recent windows code leak thing.

lol that would be msblast. use windows update.

bout the copy and pasting not working, thats something to do with a corrupted dll in your windows directory (starts with "r", can't remember sorry), probably by a virus.

About the other stuff - try virus scanners, windows update, or use your recovery cd (if you have one)

if all else fails... reinstall

Go get Panda or something similar off download.com
The scanners I've seen are only 30 day trial editions but they'll clear out any virus you might have.

thx a lot... 5 files infected... I could delete 4 files but the 5:th was in use ---> C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\winsvc.exe

what is that? Should I just delete it manually?

[EDIT]
When I try to delete this file manually I can't find it.

Forget virus checker programs, they suck. The only virus' that are able to infect your PC are the latest ones. If you simply don't open random email attatchments (blocks most modern virus'), and use some kind of firewall software (blocks things like msblast), you won't get any virus', and you won't have to keep updating some annoying program that not only spends ages scanning your PC every now and then, but also uses up resources scanning every new file you get for 1000s of virus' that nobody ever even gets anyway.

To fix the virus, download the symantec fix from:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixBlast.exe

Then disconnect from the internet, run the program, and restart. If you haven't already done it, apply the windows fix, restart again, and you are ready to safely reconnect.

If you have the resources to back-up your main stuff, just virus check it, put it on a CD or back-up HDD then reformat...even after removing worms or viruses you'll have lame little holes or glitches in your system. I've been through this lately, there are instances where I got a worm before I could update windows or my antivirus off a fresh format. If anyone says they've created one of these worms I will find out where you live and beat the crap out of you for causing frustrations and making me lose a few hours of my life. Okay, only joking, but seriously it's pathetic.

My suggestions in order for best computer operation would be:

1)Reformat and reinstall your OS.
2)Use anti-virus tools to remove the worm
3)Do nothing, and hope that other worm that removes other worms while installing itself finds you. Then you can have even more fun.

I did this, but it didn't seem to work. The virus is still there :/

Virus: BKDR SDBOT.GEN

File: C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\winsvc.exe

I have quite a lot of things I wanna backup. I plan to buy a new HD soon. Would it be a good idea to buy it now and move all important files to it and then reformat everything else?

Don't bother reinstalling windows, you can fix that virus with housecall:

http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=BKDR_SDBOT.GEN

If it doesn't work, try doing it while in safe mode.

That seemed to do the trick. Thx!

Now I only wanna know where I can find a good, free, fullversion firewall and a good, free, fullversion antivirus program.

Free, good, virus checkers: Don't bother. Just cough up the small amount of money it costs to get a proper one.

And a completely pointless one too, seeing as you said not to bother with 'free, good' virus checkers? :wtf: Why are pay ones better then?

. . . because they're most likely made by companies who release the viruses lol.

Didn't you know? Symnatec and Microsoft are the same company and they write all the viruses.

Actually, there's no reason, the all bog down your computer until it's clean anyway. If you really need to scan it (which you obviously do) there are online scanners from Symantec and Mcafee I believe, they also allow trails to be downloaded. But as for actually buying one . . . what's the point? there will be a new one out in a few months.

The don't bother was as in "don't bother looking for one". Personally, I find that I need a virus checker always installed that will check my downloads, such as Norton does - it has saved me from god-knows how many bogus files. Peace of mind is a great deal of it for me.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ <----- the best free site i know.

every time i have a scanner running "FULL TIME" it bogs my machine down to no end..

i have used just about everything, and the fact is, the ones who run full time are no better than the free one is, worse if you count the "running behind" process.

simply speaking, you cannot "JUST GET" a virus, you do not wanna guess exactly how much crap i download, i do not just waste my bandwidth on movies you know

bottom-line, it behooves the corporation's who offer free scanning, because it just cuts down on the spreading rampantly of badness.

you do have the option, with the free system to only scan what you wish it to.. if you have downloads, send them "TO" a place, and scan it there..

in 5 years of on-line time, i have had one confirmed virus, the "Happy99 virus.. and it was in my first year or so.

the link posted above, is ample coverage, and doesn't tie up resources, but the bottom line is, use something, and keep it up-to-date.

pictures and songs, as well as movie files cannot carry viruses, avoid anything else without scanning first.

/ 2 cents

I don't know if this is virus-related, but sometimes i can't click the "xx users online" button or view screenshots and stuff like that here on snarkpit. When I hold the mouse cursor over one of those buttons "javascript:void(0)" appears down in the status bar. Why? Sometimes it works and sometimes it don't. Why??

They're popup windows, so you've probably got some (really crappy) popup stopping software running...
