Just wanted to say hello and show my surprise that folks are still modding the original half life! Lol

I was just curious since I haven't used my HL editor skills in a long time...What's the newest version of worldcraft and all that? I have v3.3 right now but I'm not sure if that's up to date these days. Any other tips or advice for an old modder to get set back up these days? I'm pretty excited!

Thanks in advance and a big hello

Depends on what you will be mapping for really.

I just started again myself after nearly 4 years of non mapping.

For myself it was: Download Steam, install and update everything HL related I was gonna play. Download "Source SDK"

The source SDK is the editor for HL2 mapping.

You will need to wait for others to answer about any other games and editor info.

Welcome to Snarkpit.

Hey there!

Yeah, Half-Life 1 still isn't old for us, I really enjoy making maps for it as well. I think 3.5 is the newest version, though it is a beta version, it functions properly.

Good luck and welcome!

edit: oh, btw, it isn't Worldcraft anymore, it's Valve Hammer Editor now

Welcome mate!

The newest version is 3.5 which is a beta version as Nib said but it worked fine for me. Better make sure you have the latest version of the compile tools too.

You're still gonna need steam if you wanna play anything you build. Even if its HL1.

Hey there! I think you'll find a lot of information for editing on the old Half-Life engine. It still is our mainstay I believe. There are still plenty of tutorials and prefabs up to help get you started. Being a Source guy though, I must coax you to trying out the Source SDK if you haven't already. Works almost just like the Goldsource engine, but with plenty new features in editing and functions. Either way, you'll find support from active mappers of both engines.

Good luck, and thanks for posting! We welcome any posts you feel like commenting on throughout the site and forums. :hee:

Not always true, I've heard of people who managed to play Half-life 1 without steam just because they have an old version of the game.

Yeah there's the WON version of the game but the Steam version is more stable and elegant and there's a few minor additions to the Steam version too.

Time whip out the only thing I ever contributed to this site: http://www.snarkpit.net/index.php?s=articles&article=53

The idea should still work ... I don't even know what it says anymore though. But ... yay!
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Sheesh, thanks for that awesome welcome guys hah. I think I've got everything I need now to be back in the swing of things.

And yes, I do have the original half life CD so I'm playing without steam - (memories!)

Got myself Hammer 3.5, the new compiling tools and I've been busy mapping to my hearts desire. Funny how different (and easier) it seems when you're ten years older

Thanks again for all the info guys, got me set up in a flash - and great site here, tons of useful information to absorb! Keep mapping my friends.
