Hey, so I'm back again after my last mapping break and I've started 3D modelling this time.

It was originally intended to be a zombie replacement for HL1, but now...
As I can figure it, it attacks with it's spine/tail in a stabbing motion.

I have yet to animate it, but at only 474 faces (all quads of course, being in blender) it should be fairly easy with armatures.

So as my first model I feel pretty good about it. The only problems I had were the lower arms, the texture stretching due to lack of space on the UV wrap.

It needs a cool name!

-About that UV mapping for the lower arms; why not wrap the lower arms as a separate island of polygons? -or, make them fit within the same island as the upper arms. -That way, you wouldn't get any stretching.

It looks pretty creepy though. If a player is to be attacked by the thing, it should look angry, or maybe the 'face' needs some sort of expression or way of telling when it notices you?

Looks cool.

Well, when I was saving it I called it a "Walker" but I'm sure I could make up something interesting in latin.

The lower arms are separate islands, they just got mangled in the process of sorting out the UV map and I didn't notice it til I was nearly done.

However, I was thinking of adding some sort of metal "jaws" to it's head and if I did that, I would go ahead and redo the UV anyway.

I disagree Riven, I think it would be far scarier had it a innocent face, something cute and cuddly, and it kills you sobbing as if not wanting too... but it must have blood.

But then again a face like that of Venom from Spiderman could be just as scary.

From the looks of it, its been cut in half, the spike could be textured to look like an exposed spine, and with a little work you could add entrails from the hole in the middle of the bodice.

Actually, I envisioned it shambling down the hall of some abandoned mansion, wheezing through it's burlap "skin". As it attacks you it would make loud but muffled moaning sounds as if it's mouth was sown shut...

Also, the original idea was to make it clothed in skin and not burlap but I quickly found how inept I am at fabricating a skin for the UV so I changed it to simple burlap with burned eye spots.

As for the protruding spine and entrails, the spine could be done but I would probably want to redo it with more polys and move it to Source with jiggle-bones for the entrails.

I dunno if you remember the movie Nightbreed. That guy got a really good scare out of a burlap mask and a button. ;)

Actually, I've never seen it. I don't watch many horror movies.

You'd have to stretch the definition of horror movie quite a bit to include nightbreed.

Its really old but really good. Check it out.

Well, I had never heard of it but seeing that the previous subject was horror creatures wrapped in burlap and dripping entrails I assumed... Nevermind.

I know. It would be like saying Jason and the Argonauts was a horror movie though.

You can have scary/supernatural situations without it being horror.

Case in point. Watch Super 8.

My bad for misleading you.

Now Super 8 was a good movie... I rather enjoyed it.

I look forward to seeing the final outcome of this model.

That's really awesome for a first model :)

Maybe it could have rolled back, bloody/yellow eye whites or just show eye whites or a really pale pupil. I always get creeped out by that kind of stuff. :scared:

I was thinking of doing something similar to that on a more "fleshy" model however, if I ended up remaking this one to be a "fleshy" humanoid underneath burlap I could have holes slightly bigger than the eye sockets in the burlap. Then I could include a little bit of pale skin around sunken, pale eyes.

On a side note, what kind of head do you guys think should be on something like this? It would run at the player hunched over, dragging it's claws on the ground.
