To be honest, I doubt you will get anymore feedback on this map. Essentially here at the snarkpit we help people get their map to the best quality that the author can achieve (either limited by their skill or their willingness to work on the project further). Once the map is completed, then its out the door and we are finished with it. Obviously in the past, it would have gone off for reviews (or waited right here for one), but only HL Atlas reviews maps these days, and said reviews are few and far between.

Get working on the next one with what you learnt from this, and post screenshots and beta versions, then the loop continues

Well doesn't it defeat the whole purpose of making a map if you can't get it reviewed so people can actually see it? I mean c'mon if the map never leaves the snarkpit how is it gonna get out and actually be played? Sounds to me like we all need to do something about it.

Then go do something about it

The rest of us, who have been over this topic many, many times before, will sit back and watch you :heee:

I found a couple of things after a quick run through the map. Having some technical difficulties at the moment though so it may be a while.

Depends on your point of view about mapping - personally I do it for personal satisfaction, developing my skills, and to build a portfolio. Of course the outcome of having a map for people to play is a side effect which is nice  Regardless, HLDM alone is dying out, let alone its custom map scene. The few folks who still map for it do it more for themselves than anyone else I reckon.

Ok, I only really had a short run through the map so this is by no means thorough. A lot of stuff has been mentioned before too, eg the absolute greyness of it.

I was actually surprised to see you've used a couple of sounds in the map. Unfortunately there isn't any wind at all in space, but I doubt anyone really cares. The sound you've used for the rocket boosters (which are a nice touch may I add) is questionable to say the least. I can't really think of anything to compare it to, except 50 ugly children tapdancing really fast in an almost soundproof room. Not that I'd know what children in a nearly soundproof room sound like...

The sky you used is extremely bland, it's a black canvas with a clutter of white "stars" on it. I've never been very far up in space myself, but you can probably see the sun from up there. You might want to consider raising the level of the sky a bit too, gauss jumping to the top can be a pain sometimes.

Here are a few screens I took of errors I found.

User posted image
1. Three errors in this screenshot. If you construct the brushes the way I've outlined, that texture error will be eliminated. There's a small gap in the fade where the yellow circle is. The red circle is the worst error of all, but still easily fixed. Read this tutorial about r_speeds and face splitting.http://www.snarkpit.com/editing.php?page=tutorials&id=60&highlight=splitting

User posted image
2. The intricate drawing in the top left clearly illustrates the need for an improved sky. The green circle surrounds a rebellious brush which is mysteriously lower than his friends.

3. More face splitting here, refer to screen one.

4. There is a hole in the underside of the stairs here. The undersides of all these steps would look much nicer if it was all one smooth slope rather than inverted steps. A slope would help the r_speeds too.

Overall it's quite a clean architecturally sound map, nice work. I'd suggest experimenting a bit more and being more creative. I'll be looking forward to your next release.

Thanks for the tips and errors you pointed out in my map Alien Sniper they should really help out in my next level. I guess yall are right though, I really didn't even realize how old Half-life is so I guess you cant expect a big community.

No problem bud, glad you found it helpful

Bear in mind halflife 2 uses an updated version of hammer, and a lot of the basics will be the same. You're getting a great headstart on all the people who will start mapping when hl2 comes out.

Half-Life might be old, but the community is rather large for a 5 1/2 year old game. it's just the snarkpit doesn't represent the entire community, only an extremely small portion. If you want to get your map played by others, try to spread it around other forums (that allow you to advertise your maps). Though people do focus more on mods than traditional deathmatch nowadays.

Moron,

It seems that I typed YOU need to do something about it, because THE COMMUNITY has already discussed this ad nauseam. People don't care enough about HL anymore to run review sites etc. Don't be a dickwad.
