Ok well this is a newbie question yet again!! But thats what I am liking about this board!!!

Anyways I am making a fence... and using the half-life 2 texture set to do this... anyways I have for my fence 2 posts sticking out of the ground with 2 wood cross members on one side that are all textured and working fine with the same texture of a dark wood... well the ACTUAL fence portion.. the planks that make up the fence I used a different text props_woodfence1a is the texture name... i applied the texture in hammer and it seems to work fine... then I went and tested the map out...as i do alot cause I am new to this mapping stuff and so I am checking out the features and tricks as i go along... but anyways when I got to play my map the fence boards were black... and now when I go back to the editor and look at them they are also black? Anyone know where I went wrong? Or what might be happening with this texture set ...cause if I apply something other then the solid fence texture to it ... it seems to work again... but I dont really WANT a grass fence!!! LOL

Uh, it sounds like you're trying to apply a texture to a model? I don't think Hammer/HL2 can cope with that. O_o

no its not a model... I am using the block tool and just kind of putting things together to LOOK like they should.... still using everything inside Hammer to create this... and it seems now that I have used this texture it wont apply to a simple box anymore without it just turning black on me

Check the console in game -- are there any "red" messages?

And is the compile log giving you any errors?

ok I dont know what happened here but I compiled the map then loaded it.... no errors in the compile and the only thing I get in the loading of the map is "
env_cubemap used on world geometry without rebuilding map. . ignoring: concrete/concretefloor033k" but thats not even the texture I am talking about... but I wanted to see if other things worked in the world like my breakable glass... so I used the cheap give weapon_crowbar to break some glass I made... and blammo... my texture for my fence was there... weird eh? But it still doesnt show in my editor!!?!?!?!

No clue either.

You say you are using props for fence boards.....right? then you say that those props are black.....right?

Explain better this time......

Because you are using a prop_####### the texture won't work as it is a prebuilt model to be used in game, therefore has more properties than just a texture. When it compiles it won't use the prop_####### texture. Use a different one that isn't a prop and all should be fine
