The lights in my maps are light_spots. They look better than normal light entities but I couldn't find upon a way to light up the light fittings themselves - they're bathed in darkness! point_spotlights are way too bright, can they be dimmed down or should I try putting a light entity and setting it very dim? Or an env_sunlight?

Yes, use a light entity. Don't be afraid to just try things out and
experiment. You'll learn more and save time rather than waiting for
answers here.
