Where is the harbor? I see a small compound in the desert?

(Sorry, wrong thread)
I'll critique this map some time later today or tomorrow. Looks good from the screens though. Is it a direct remake or just the same sort of style? I think I recognise bits of it.

Not to be rude, or harsh.. but..

If I have to use my imagination to picture a harbor, in the desert.. then I might as well.. play another map.

The abbey looks pretty nice, although I only see 4 textures total, including the sky. Throw some more diversity in there.

Do you know how to change the sky texture?

Click MAP, then Map Properties, then select enviroment map (sky name ).

Under Smart Edit is a white box, type in the sky name you wish to use there.

First off, i understand about the sky text. Second of all, i know how to change it and third of all, its not an origianal map, if you would take the time to read the summery of the map in my profile, you would see that they (op4_abby, and op4_harbor) both came from 007. And finaly, i play, and have fun on maps because they have good gameplay, not becasue they look pretty. I joined to become a better mapper and the such, and i always appreciate the input on my maps, but i cant imagin that just becuse a newbie mapper makes a simple sky texture error your going to not even give the map a try and play it....thats just wrong

Look, just because we didn't immediately give it glowing reviews is no reason to complain. If you'd take advice to heart rather than getting upset, you'd be a lot better served by our comments. Whether you'd rather have good gameplay or pretty scenery is your decision, but strive for both. That's why you joined, right? We're just trying to help you improve the latter.

Besides, Sim already said he'd critique your map, so why are you complaining that nobody's going to try it out?

Hey, I am just trying to help. I tend to shoot straight, rather than blow smoke up a persons @$$. And I never said I would not give it a try.. I just feel that if a map is called op4_harbor, then it should look and feel like a harbor, and I also think a Sky texture helps with that.

The map looks nothing like a harbor.

Critique for op4_harbor
  • Various texture misalignments. You need to use some sort of trim texture on the side, or at least rotate the one you have:

  • The flickering light flickers too much, it's annoying. The window should have a pane around it, so try making it a bit thinner. Make the boarded windows over the building:

And here is what I mean:

  • This wood texture is ugly because it tiles too much. Half the width of the balcony or change the texture:
    User posted image
  • Like the architecture, but is it just the same as the original?
    User posted image
  • The water ends abruptly here. The building should either go down to the ground ot should have struts to keep it up. And I lost my snark!
    User posted image
  • Nice idea making the player crouch for the longjump:

  • More yukky textures:
    User posted image
  • You might want to clip this off:

  • Common ladder texture mistake on top:
    User posted image
  • Can't be very comfortable for snarks, living on a 30 degree slope:
    User posted image
  • Not much light here. Maybe an on/off switch? It's a bit empty too:
    User posted image
    And what's this?
    User posted image
  • This looks odd. No bulb, and the light is too dark:
    User posted image
  • The sky needs changing.
  • There are too many batteries and maybe too many healthkits
  • There are a lot of weapons. You might want to consider not including them all because this is a small map.
  • Your r_speeds reach 1900 wpoly and 5500 epoly which isn't good. you're getting this because a lot of you map is open. The HL engine isn't very good at making big environments. Of course, HL2 should be able to run this map with ease, but I would suggest trying a map focused mainly indoors because the r's would be much better.
This is overall an OK remake. There are some little flaws here and there and the weapon placement needs some adjusting, but I can see it being a fun map.

You should focus your skills on:
  • Texturing
  • Lighting
  • Fixing small errors
  • R_speeds

you guys are getting pretty damned good at these critiques, i wonder where you learned them from

seriously tho, to the author of this thread, people don't have to say anything at all, the fact that everyone whom did, was positive, in their negativity, is a good sign, use the advice you wish, discard the rest, but my advice, do not burn your bridges behind you...

if you complain about your received feedback, your future input will be severely limited, that much i can assure you :/

Ok, well i see i was misinterpreted. First of all, Sim thanks again for your info, i really appreciate it. I see that in all my maps, my r_speeds and textures and weapon placements are weak. I will keep this in mind on future maps.

Second, about this statement
Ronin said:

When i said that your not going to try the map, i ment that just beacuse I used a wrong texture on a map causes you, the player, to leave my map beacuse of the wrong sky texture and totally disregarding the value of play (no matter how hi or low) just seemed kinda odd to me, thats all. Im not complaing, i said noting about people not helping me, and i said nothing about no one critiquing my maps. I value this websites opinions very much, even though at times i dont understand why they made the choices they did. If i was afraid of being shot down as a newbie mapper i wouldnt subbmit maps. And if i was afraid that i would be joked or taunted, i wouldnt ask questions. I hope this clears things up. My appologies to all that i might of offended.
