Is there a way to give the illusion of water flowing downstream? I've
seen that theres some flow textures in hl1, but in hl2, all the water
seems to kinda flow in every direction (like standing water). I need
some water that flows down a hill into a river, and it would look quite
stupid if it wasnt moving.

Also, this is for a multiplayer map, and as I understand it, this will
cause ridiculous performance issues. If I can't do flowing water, I
still need to use some standing water, because I plan on using water
based vehicles (or maybe just trains that go over the water :/ ). A bit
overzealous for me, maybe, but what better way to learn...

So what you're saying is that you want a downhill texture, but because of the performance you don't and thus you didn't need to post this?

Anyways there ins't such a texture that I know of, but I think a normal texture would look fine as long as the slope isn't 90 degrees.

Perhaps an animated texture would work. You might also be able to use
material proxies to scroll an existing water texture, which would save
you making a whole load of animated frames . However, I haven't tried
it, nor do I know any references on how to do it.

THE FOLLOWING ISNT A QUOTE BUT THE FORUM IS BEING WEIRD SO IT LOOKS LIKE ONE<<
yeah, I was just rambling... I still want flowing water.

Basically what you guys are saying is that HL2 doesn't natively support the flowing water effect that HL1 did? This is odd..

Well, the reason why is that there isn't really "water" in hl2. It's just a sine wave with mapped alphas and crap.

However, Mint Sauce made a good looking waterfall (with cameras and monitors).

Perhaps he will grace us with a well written tutorial.

I must say the waterfall is great but it brings down performanceby 90%...
