alright I made a spiral staircase, and then I tried to make a railing for it. It looked terrible and bumpy. Is there a good way to make a smooth spiraling railing?

something like that would really need to be made as a model, i'm afraid.

Just for reference, incase someone else does, there is an easy way to do it.

I'm not on my home computer right now, so I don't have hammer on-hand, so I'll do it by memory.

Create an Arch, and when the pop-up window comes, set these general parameters and check it in the preview window. Make the pieces almost meet in the center of the preview window, and add as many stairs as you want. Then add height as much as you want.

These are very basic things, and I'll change it once I get on my computer. Just tinker around with those settings until you get what you want.

i think he already did that, but if you make another arch with the same
settings as the stairase BUT with a thinner wall width, i think you can
make something that looks like a railing, and then texure it with a
grate texture

For a railing, if you wanted to make one, create the arch with a very thin wall, but otherwise the same properties as your staircase, with the add height as well. Once you made it, position it over your staircase and resize each piece to the height you want, and to meet the top of the stair itself. After this, it will still be quite a jagged raailing. The only way to do this without making a model would be to take each section individually and angle it to meet the others until you have something satisfactory.

The real issue with making brush-based things like this is that they don't look too good for their price. Models will look better, are cheaper, and with XSI or VMF importers for your editor of choice it's easy to make a railing model with a bit of practice.
