one of the mappers on the AHL forums wanted to know how I did this moving fountain, so I figured I'd share it with you guys as well. I'll probably do a proper tutorial eventually (it's just that my webpage is on my other computer, which I can't use online since it has no 56k modem  ). This zip has a sample .rmf, .map, .bsp, a text file with info and a few needed files.

it's pretty simple, really- an env_shooter shoots the sprites up in the air and they come back down, creating a pretty smooth and natural fountain effect. it's a potentially buggy effect, though, so be sure to read the text file.

Yup, looks like a very nice FX, thats given me an idea for using something similar in a waterfall

glad you guys like it. yes, the effect is nice... the randomness makes it look very natural. the screenshot can't really do it justice, you have to see it in motion.

you might be able to use it for a waterfall, though you won't want the sprites actually falling into a water brush or you'll get constant, annoying 'splish' sounds.

just be sure to skim the text file before messing with this effect; it has problems, and you can cause crashes with it too if you aren't cautious and have too many sprites in play at once.

oh yeah, I used the same thing to create cinders that periodically spit out of the fires on that map, too. it's a nice little effect, makes them seem more real.

EDIT: Beer, I just had a thought. for what you are doing, a series of env_lasers with a custom 'water' sprite might be less difficult since you only need the water going one direction. just a thought. stuff like this takes tons of tinkering to get it looking right

Excellent suggestion

Yeah, the screenies don't do it justice at all, much nicer in-game. The text file description was pretty easy to understand, seems to have covered most stuff.

I know what you mean about the tinkering, seems to take me forever to get any decent FX up and running /sighs

go for it, brass. just give me a mention in your readme, maybe with a link to my webpage?

heh this is one of my experiments with sprites that actually netted something. /me shudders to think of that horrible grass

I used a sprite and some carefully made func_illusionaries to create better lightbeams in Temple, maybe I'll do something showing those as well (it's not that hard). It's kinda fun rigging fx for an older game like HL
