When I play source I find that my +showbudget is jumping around like crazy.

User posted image

as you can see, random items jump to make and my "fps" dips rom 60+ or
-400! I dont see how fps can go into the negative... So, tell me
you smart people, why is this happening? My net_graph shows
normal fps, and I never really see any performace issues, though some
times I feel a slight stutter.

I have up-to-date Drivers, what could it be? If need be I'll post my specs.

Quit bitching if it doesn't effect performance. It's most likely some small bug. Unless it actually craps out on you when it for to -400 fps. However, you should know that's not necessarily a video problem, your system bus or processor could be too heavily loaded, but then you'd notice stuttering.

I'd suggest, if it's stuttering, to turn your stuff down. If your video card has 128Mb of ram, turn down texture resolutions, filtering, or whatever it's called. Then go to shadows. Those are the biggest hogs. (From that there's light then water, but both of those are fairly efficient)

valve bug, or clock timing bug maybe.
To get something to work, sometimes you just have to beat your head against the wall longer; the skin grows back, but the brick doesn't.

Do you get the same numbers with the netgragh command as well? If not, then I wouldn't worry. If so, then.......
There is no history until something happens, then there is.

Crono your so mean  It just bothers me. I'll go in, turn
all my stuff to its lowest setting and see if it still happens.
Though I doubt its my hardware, I have a 256mb gfx card and like a 1200
fsb, as well as 2 gigs of ram.

Maybe its my dule core 64 bit processor? Some one told me dule core was bad for gaming?

Uh ... I wouldn't know why it would be "worse for games". If it's the AMD one, which I assume it is, it probably optimizes on it's own so the software doesn't need to be written for Duel core specifically. That's like saying, my car just doesn't perform well when I use Texaco gas, but is made to use Chevron gas. (Not to mention, the processor really has less to do with game performance then the common perception)

By the way, you should have your texture compression on medium then. Since, high is for 512 Mb video cards (I think). It's really pointless in any case because you don't notice the difference. It's just the quality of the texture in your video card memory. More memory means you can have "larger" textures. Nothing too important, but when the memory is being shared with visual information it can really bog down everything. I've noticed this is especially true in HL2, though.

I could explain some more, because large numbers mean nothing if they don't coincide properly (which isn't the case here). I don't know how the 64 X2 works, so, I can't really go into how its performance is affected by the system bus.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

You appear to have accidentally converted your computer into a time machine. What you are seeing on your screen is 2.1 milliseconds in the future, and that's why your framerate is negative. Whatever you did, change it back before you screw up history, or before Valve thinks that your cheating.

Seriously though, that's just wierd. If it's not affecting performance, it's probably nothing of any great importance.
