hi guys

i hope someone knows this, cause i tried googling etc and no solution..

This is the situation: i have a custom mp3 in my map, it's in the
directory .../hl2mp/sound/mp3 and called loop3.mp3. So far so good and
everything works fine ingame. Now i embedded it in the .bsp with
packrat and played the .bsp on my bro's pc, and everything was still
fine, the mp3 playing ingame. Now the problem is that when a m8
downloaded that .bsp, the custom textures etc would load, but not the
.mp3 on his pc. He said it gave this error :

Failed to load sound "sound/mp3/loop3.mp3",
file probably missing from disk/repository.

(i'm not sure about the "sound/mp3 part" )

How come it works on my bro's pc but not on his' ? And how do i fix this ?

thx in advance

This is just a guess, but, it seemss like it was looking for the file under his sound/mp3/ directory instead of within the bsp it self.

An easy way to check is to place that mp3 file in the directory it says it's missing from, if it plays, then the file targeting isn't working properly.

If it becomes too much of a hassle, just release it as a rared or zipped archive instead of embedding it all in the bsp.

It's probably just a path issue. Are the custom textures separate from the bsp or embedded?
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

the thing is, i doubt that it's a path issue cause 1) packrat places
them into the right embedded-paths anyway (atleast i would think). 2)
it works on my bro's pc. This is what strikes me the most honestly.

the custom tex are embedded. if nothing comes up i'll try to load the mp3 not-embedded.

i thought this too at first, but there is no such directory nor file on
my bro's pc, meaning that it must be embedded correctly. maybe
something to do with a server-side bug? still i cant imagine
everyone who embeds custom sound files into his bsp has this problem.

Well, it doesn't matter, to be honest, bugs aren't always consistent. That's why only a few people with a certain configuration get them.

Just try it and see if it works. If it doesn't, that possibility will be ruled out. But, I think that's it, since he's getting an error message saying that this file at this location doesn't exist and the map is trying to access it.

I have some other ideas of how you can isolate the issue, but just give this a try first. In fact, it doesn't even need to be the correct mp3 file, just any mp3 file to see if it plays in game (named and located properly, of course).
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

thx for trying to help

the problem is that i need my m8 for testing this, and he isnt available.

So i went for the backdoor solution and did not embed the mp3 in the bsp but made it install seperatly via the zip.

would be handy to know still
