Strange.
Well, it appears that if you just make a prop_physics or prop_physics_multiplayer and give it the oil drum exploding model ... it'll work, since it has it's own properties.
Try remaking a couple of them and using the hand gun to blow them up. Just shoot them a couple times to see if they catch fire and such.
If it still doesn't work ... I don't know what to tell you, because that's how you make exploding barrels.

Does your map have smoke_volume in it? or lots of steam entities? Source can only draw so many sprites (20,000 I think) Place any partical entities in a VIS group and hide them, then compile.
ok, I didn't read the last post, but yeah if you max out your particals no more will show up.
