Where do I put the .vmt file and what do I put in it (different from
hl2dm) to get it to fork for counter-strike source? The tutorial was
great but I can't seem to translate it to work with css.
Any help would be a preciated!

it doesn't really matter where the vmt goes. just create a folder somewhere in your materials directory and put it there. as long as the text in the vmt points at two existing textures you shouldn't have a problem.

that is the isue, I put the vmt in a folder with my map name in the
materials folder, but when I look in my materials in hammer, I get the
pink and black squares.
I assume it is a problem in the path of my vmt file. I must have to put
a different path for css, I just can't get it to work no matter what I
do

you say you get purple checks in the editor. i know this sounds daft, but have you tried texturing anything with it? please try if you haven't already.
other than that, you could post your vmt contents
