Greetings, FNG here, though I've been mapping for HL for a while now.
Anyway, as per my topic, I have a room, fairly large, not gigantic by any means. The r_speeds wpoly cap out around 750, but on average are 3-500 as I walk around the room. Nonetheless, my framerate takes a nasty hit, based on the numbers that r_speeds displays for fps, it goes from 50-60 as I walk around the rest of the map (areas with equal or less wpoly) but in this room, I get knocked down to 14-24 as it jumps around. (The exact numbers aren't a worry to me, it's the drop. It's very noticeable when I walk in and run around the room.)
This is the middle of a natural-selection combat map. I've got a couple large func_wall's making up ramps using a big grate texture. Some large overlays on monitors, nothing particularly out of the ordinary for a ns map, I'd say. No models either.
Anyway, if anyone can give me any ideas on what can cause significant framerate drops other than r_speeds (which is all my searching has found), it would be a great help.
Cheers!

Could we get a screenie or so of the area to give us some perspective? Or the bsp might help, though tbh I no longer have HL1 stuff installed myself.

Hmm. Upon further testing, with Hammer closed, (doh) I suppose the difference isn't that bad. I guess I could sum this up to paranoia. (I walked around some of the mods official maps and saw similar differences.)
Sorry to have wasted yer time.
Cheers!

you could go to your console and type +showbudget and walk around and see what the problem is. It may also be simply something like a spotlight that is casting dynamic light when it may not need too.
