Ok my friend is upgrading from 256k to 1.5 meg with 256k upload. I'm just curious as to how many computers this can have on at a time on HL2DM or Counter-Strike 1.6. Answers appreciated.

You mean hosting? Not too many people.
1.5 Mb DSL doesn't say how fast the upload is ... I can only assume ... .5? 1?
The easiest way to find out is to try it and see when everything starts getting bogged down for the clients.
Is it going to be dedicated? That matters too.

Sorry for not posting this in enough detail. What I mean by this is how many people could play on one server using the modem and a switch. For example, we all connect to a GameArena server through the modem via a hub/switch. If we did this, I was just wondering how many people could fit on with out lagging too much, just in case anyone has 1500k adsl and has tried before. By the way, its 256k upload. Back on his 256 download 64k upload net we could fit two people at a time fairly easily, so five shouldnt be a problem with 1500k dl 256k upload but I was just wondering incase someone has tried it before or knows it won't work for any particular reason.

I believe so. I know lanning people over steam to a single server outside the network works fine, I do it all the time for DoD.
You could probably get something like 8 people (I pulled that number out of my ass, by the way). Playing games online doesn't require that much bandwidth.
You can always check it mathematically. Find out what's the average transfer size per second on servers (Just check the monitor stuff). Then, divide the connection speed by the amount of people you want ... if the answer is larger than the transfer rate per second ... then you're good to go. If it's lower, you MAY experience some lag. But, you have to remember servers don't transfer a whole lot usually, just some bits of scores and positions here and there. Also, something that may happen is a certain number of people on your lan will be playing smooth and fine and a couple people will get lag city.
But, I'm guessing about 8 would still be fine. I've done up to about 6 on mine with zero slow down. (But my connection is about 3x as fast)
Give it a try.

Thanks. An intresting thing though we noticed the other day when I brang my PC over his place to play cs with his old connection (256k/64k) is that Counter Strike 1.6 can handle about only 2 people without excessive 600+ latency but Counter Strike Source can handle 3 people no problem with the latency around 70-100.
