Network troubles

ok so i have 2 computers no router when i hook one of the computers up to the modem the internet doesnt work yet when i plug the other 1 in it works? any ideas , yes i have all the drivers installed

All we know is that you have two computers A and B.

Are they connected to each other? If so, how?

What kind of modem are you talking about? Is it a Router+Modem?

When A is connected to the modem, can A access the net? Can B Access the net?

When B is connected to the modem, can A access the net? Can B Access the net?

What do you mean by "the internet doesn't work?" Browsing? Games? Ping? All of the above?

It doesn't use drivers persay.

One obviously has been set up for the internet and one not.

Go into control panel>network connections>new connection wizard and follow the instructions. (assuming you have XP)

In any case, you need control panel and internet options. Once inside you need these options available.

• client for microsoft networks
• file and printer sharing for microsoft networks
• QoS packet scheduler
• Internet protocol(tcp/ip)

if you have win98 or winME you will need other stuff as well since its very old.

He IMed me, helped him, and to state the solution ... since this is a public forum and in case someone else has the same problem:

The issue was that he had two computers, one internet connection, no router, so one internet online at a time, it's DSL if you're wondering (that part doesn't matter much). The issue he was having is that he'd unplug the ehternet from one computer move it to another computer and the internet wouldn't work on the second computer.

Sotution: In this situation it was a simple matter of the first computer releasing the IP address. I told him to release it before unhooking the cable before putting it in the second computer and renewing there. That worked.

Reason: Most likely, it's because his account is only paid for 1 IP address on the ISP servers. So if another connection is requested, it is refused. Which could be a new "tactic" at the ISP, which would explain why it worked before and not now.

In any case, case closed. I know he thought he had to buy a new router because he couldn't get the Linksys he had working ... if you'd post up some details about that, you'll get some help here so that can get going as well.

From now on though, type the problem out in detail with anything that seems relavent. Not just, my network doesn't work with two computers. :razz:
