I'm wondering if I should release this map, once it's finished, using
sounds ripped form other games. From what I've seen it's damn near
impossible to find high-quality sound effects for free on the internet;
everyone's out to make a few bucks.
So, for my own tastes at least, I've resorted to "borrowing" sounds from other games.
My question to you, is would it be moral/legal to release the map using these sounds, so long as credit is given?
Specifically, ambient sounds from Blood 1 and Blood 2 have been used.
They fit the map quite well, and from my experience it would be quite
hard to find anything similar on the internet.
I'm allergic to tequila, it makes me break out in felonies.

Why do people always ask this question to other people who have no say?
A) This isn't a question for the mapping forum, I'm afraid.
B) This has been covered many times on the SP.
The general consensus is:
ASK THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THE SOUND!
Send an email along to the companies way. Explain you're making a map and are using some sound effects from their games (say which ones), explain that you are giving full credit to them and ask if they mind.
If they don't reply, state that in a readme file, along with credit due. And if they take legal action, (doubtful) you have an email proving you sent a request for permission, but they never responded, and you gave due credit anyway.
There's nothing immoral about it though. At all. The other thing is, rarely, will you ever get permission from the creator of the "work", but rather permission by distributor(s). So ... you'll technically will never know if it's okay to use it or not from the creators
Hope that helps.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

You can take all the sounds from blood 1. Weirdly enough it is an abandonware today(unlike doom1). ID don't seem to care much about it, they no longer sell it.(well thats at list what I know from abandonia and they only allow to download abandonwares)
As for newer games that aren't abandonwares you'll have to ask for the distributor's permission. I don't think they'll care though, it's not like you're giving their game for free.
